WASHINGTON -- What will become of the nation's capital?
The huge West Antarctic ice sheet is slowly collapsing, and two groups of scientists say the melting is now an unstoppable event.
Melting ice will cause sea levels to rise higher than initially projected, which is cause for concern for D.C.-area scientists and local urban planners.
The rising seas will affect local treasures, including the Chesapeake Bay and the country's iconic monuments along the National Mall.
Actually, because some of it sticks out of the water, (but the mass equals that of the water it displaces, and it is water, after all), sea level will be very close to the same level.
There will be a negligible rise as the ice is fresh water and less dense than seawater, so the volume will be slightly higher, just not enough to make any change in ocean level beyond a fraction of a millimeter. Locally, there will be a drop in salinity as the fresh water mixes with seawater.
Am I supposed to be rooting for melting? or my new oceanfront property?
This is bullsheet!
AMEN and AMEN!
Hey it’s UNSTOPPABLE....we must make out it.. what we can!
Im personally selling eveything I own and buying TIME LAPSE PHOTOGRAPHIC GEAR!!!
I expect to make millions in a few decades!!
From a modern update of Darwin's "Origin of the Species," a book titled "Darwin's Ghost" ... by Steve Jones ... we have ...
"When two continents crash, a mountain range is thrust toward the skies. That is why the summit of Everest is formed of rocks made in a shallow sea"
Here was my argument to my lefty friends whom I had dinner with last night. I asked them to follow the logic. This was funny because people from other tables were interning.
1. In the 70’s we were told if we didn’t stop polluting, there would be an ice age. I asked if they remembered that. Answer was yes.
2. I said, the USA transformed many of its companies to fulfill environmental regulations. Scrubbers, and other tools to reduce Carbon emissions. This was a good thing, yes? Answer was yes.
3. Many of these companies, from steel mills to other manufacturing companies moved overseas because they could no longer compete, and refineries in the US stopped critical upgrades. Again, yes.
At this point, I could tell they were waiting for the bomb to drop.
So, I said. Based on this would it be safe to say that removing additional carbons from the atmosphere warmed us up as it was supposed to do? Some nods.
So then, would it there safe to say that getting rid of even more carbons from the atmosphere would warm the planet even more, perhaps causing global warming?
And finally, I submit to you that environmentalism caused the problem and doing things like Keystone will actually be good for the environment.
My friend, who I have known for years turns to me and says one word... Racist.
Interning = listening.
Sheesh... Time for a new iPad.
Melt Melt.
I hear Rats dont like water.
That African king probably sold slaves to the people who sold them to Washington.
Can we get these geniuses to commit to a definite timeline? If we all give our life’s savings to Oracle Al Gore, will he prevent this terrible disaster?
Wait a minute; you said Washington, DC will be inundated? Hang on to your savings, everybody.
Id be willing to contribute to the flood...if thre were a way to do so.
I think more likely it would be renamed “Martin Luther King, Jr., City.” Or maybe “The Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., City.”
The capitol will survive with Hillary, Pelosi, Boxer and Feinstein on the job! How can a rising sea get through those dykes?
Promises, promises...
Or, even more likely, to a Muslim middleman from ObaMao’s tribe.
“The rising seas will affect local treasures, including the Chesapeake Bay and the country’s iconic monuments along the National Mall.”
As Bill Cosby says; “Riiiiight”
Already happened back in 2000. Washington DC has been under water since 2009.
Underwater and Upside down!!
AMEN
