Longtime Michigan Congressman John Conyers joined a federal lawsuit Thursday taking aim at the requirement that petition collectors be registered voters, as part of a larger challenge to an order removing his name from the primary ballot in August.
Conyers, who was first elected to the House in 1964 and represents a district including Detroit and several suburbs, joined the suit two days after Wayne County Clerk Cathy Garrett determined he didnt have enough signatures to appear on the Aug. 5 Democratic primary ballot. She found Conyers was more than 400 signatures short of 1,000 needed.
The suit was filed against Garrett and Michigan Secretary of State Ruth Johnson by the American Civil Liberties Unions Michigan chapter on behalf of two petition circulators and others. The signatures they gathered werent counted because they hadnt complied with state voter registration requirements.
The ACLU also asked the court to order Garrett and Johnson to stop enforcing the law, which the group deems unconstitutional. A hearing is planned for Wednesday in U.S. District Court in Detroit.

Laws are for the little people and don’t apply to democrats.
When the election process doesn’t work for you, go to the courts-Democrats.
The district is designed in such a way that a Republican can never win. After reading up on this Horace Sheffield guy...I’d he’s a one-term and over guy, if he wins. Last month...some guy in Detroit put a civil suite into effect against Sheffield....defamation, I think. The two key elements of Sheffield is that he’s got the church vote in the district...something that Conyers can’t brag about...and there are some connections of the Sheffield family (going way back) to the unions in Detroit. Maybe Sheffield could take half the union vote, and just squeak out the win.
Then he’ll likely do something stupid...hire the wrong person like Conyers did, and get into some state or federal issues.
I would say this...two years from now (if Conyers loses out)....I think Sheffield will face a serious challenge from within the party apparatus for the 2016 episode, and some new younger Democrat will arrive on the scene.
My bet is he will be on the ballot. Rules are for the governed.
He’s black and a democrat....rules mean nothing!!
I think Lisa Murkowski did it in Alaska!!
I saw an interview with his spokes idiot and one of the petition collectors has an open warrant for burglery. As soon as this story broke, he went on the run. So, when the spokesperson was asked about the need to hire a criminal, his response was, “I think it was a good thing and would hire him again. It’s better that he is busy collecting signatures and not doing bad things.”
I thought, “Well, that sums up America today...”
Too bad Horace Sheffield is just as bad.
