WARNING: Take this with a grain of salt. This is the channel that ran a story for a couple hours this morning with a guy saying he couldn't evacuate because his van had a bad "muffler bearing".
Team 10 sources say all but one of the fires that have been burning across San Diego County have a suspicious ignition point.
'Fire bugs' is the term being used inside the fire agencies. Sources say the fires started in a way that were not normal -- there were no sparks from a lawnmower or car engine, no thrown cigarettes and no cars involved.
One source, a long-time arson investigator who is now retired, told us that CAL FIRE has a crack investigative team that will be looking closely at physical evidence and talking to witnesses to try to determine exactly how these fires started. The San Diego Fire Department also has an investigative team that will be looking into this.
Locals will be asked if they saw anything suspicious or noticed strange activity in their area. The Carlsbad Police Department has already established a Tip Hotline for the Poinsettia Fire. Anyone with information can call (760) 602-7599 or send investigators an email.
Fire crews have been battling nine fires across the county. No one has been injured but homes have been lost. Gov. Jerry Brown declared a state of emergency on Wednesday, clearing the way for more resources to help local firefighters.
“How does one spell jihadi?
Muslim.
Yup. They also wait for strong Santa Ana winds to spread the flames quickly. These fires look very suspicious.
no, and apparently neither does the man who owns the muffler
Well, based strictly on the one comment above, I didn't take him for that, but as someone who may have been tired of the newspeople getting in the way. I didn't see the original report about the guy. Context is everything.
I saw the memo. You are correct.
Jihadists, I’ll bet.
It’s either Islamic TERRORISTS, or a disgruntled fireman.
i posted this list pretty late last nite on another thread but seems appropriate to this conversation, too. Only the Anaheim and Tomahawk fires were isolated to vehicle fire origins. My guess is the perp lives somewhere in the area south of the last fire. There was no way to get north on I5 or I15 because of extended closures of each from early afternoon on. Don’t know what it means for a high school and a college to be on the list but it might be a hint somehow.

The Oceanside fire (which I think is near N River Road) has been flaring up all day.
I live in North County San Diego, and all of those fires began within 25 miles of our town. They did not start at the same time but started in about a one hour sequence. Some mentally deficient and aggrieved dude in an old pickup will no doubt be collared for the crime within the next week.
They just said they have an arson suspect in custody.
that’s good news
Yes it is. It’s sad that it has to happen.
Fire Lover by Josseph Wambaugh. Great author, great read.
“Do mufflers have bearings?”
Of course. Right next to the universal joint.
Don’t involve Holder; he’ll assign the arsonist to the DHS.
And above the thingamagig....
Whatever happened to few neighbors in the 2012 fires that started a backfire on a couple or three properties right before the main blaze hit them? They set the backfires when They saw the firemen pull out. If I recall those two or three houses were the only ones to survive out of 500. Amazingly the prosecutor wanted to charge them with arson.
