A Terrifying GIF Of An Ice Age Ripping Through The US

The northern ice cap creeps over earth.

As we watch glaciers around the world recede, we sometimes hear the argument that these changes are part of the Earth's natural fluctuation. To some extent, they are.

We've been in a relatively stable and warm period for at least 15,000 years. And we are unnaturally making the Earth even warmer. Before that, ice ages covered most of the Northern Hemisphere with glaciers.

The last of the five major ice ages, called the Pleistocene glaciation, began about 1.5 million years ago. It is thought to be caused in part by the Earth getting less of the sun's warming radiation — because of the pull of other planets in our solar system.

The Pleistocene glaciation contained at least 20 ice fluctuations within it, in which ice advanced and receded. Sometimes, up to 30% of Earth was covered in ice.

At times this included the better part of North America — California became almost completely entombed in ice. Today, evidence of the glacial takeover can be found as far down as southern California's San Bernardino Mountains.

If this GIF is meant to mimic the last major glaciation, then it is inaccurate for the east coast also. For example, a terminal moraine for the last ice age is located just north of Morristown New Jersey (meaning this is the farthest south the ice sheet extended). This Gif shows an ice sheet extending several hundred miles south of that point.

Here are the questions climate scientists cannot answer:

1. What caused the ice sheets that covered the northern hemisphere 70,000 years ago?

2. Why did they melt?

and the real kicker:

3. What is the earth’s climate “supposed” to be?

Until they can answer those questions, I say we burn coal and stay warm.

My family comes from a long line of climatic sciencivmists.

1. My granpaw told all of us younguns that the melting came from clogged in-take vents due to someone not changing the filters. Either that or the compressor froze up.

2. Why did what melt?

3. Earth's climate is always "supposed" to be good enough that folks like to visit here for a long whilc but not well enough to ever call it home.

Ditto. It also doesn’t show the growth of the Great Lakes as the St. Lawrence is blocked by an ice dam.

Well somebody tell Leslie to cheer up because a lot of weather experts think we are entering another mini ice age like the one from the 1600’s to the early 1800’s

And we are unnaturally making the Earth even warmer.

No, we are not. The planet has been warmer even in this current inter-glacial period.

easterbrook_fig41.jpg

Most of the past 10,000 [years] have been warmer than the present. Figure 4 shows temperatures from the GISP2 Greenland ice core. With the exception of a brief warm period about 8,200 years ago, the entire period from 1,500 to 10,500 years ago was significantly warmer than present.

Most of the last 10,000 years were warmer
