One of the worst things that is happening in the political life of this nation is the tendency of political candidate - and let's be honest, both parties do it - to use any opportunity to create a negative impression about an opponent, no matter how dishonest that impression may be.
Yup and it disgusts me to no end. One of the worst in my opinion is using a record of procedural votes to claim a candidate supported or opposed a bigger issue. Its not uncommon to vote yes to proceed with a bill that they oppose because they know it won't pass.

That’s why I hate campaign season. Nothing but negative campaign ads. “Look what my opponent did,” instead of “If I am elected this is what I plan to do.”
I can understand if a candidate makes no promises, they won’t come back to bite him in the rear. (”Read my lips...no new taxes.)

My local state house candidate, who appears to be the more conservative, is utterly smearing his opponent, and I’m likely to vote for the accused RINO instead of the jerk with no character.
For instance, some employees of the large law firm he’s at have donated to Democrats, and some of the firm’s clients have asked the firm to represent them in DC.
That turns into: “His company supports Democrats, and was helping its cronies to feed at the failed stimulus trough!” or such.
