Laurel Leader Call Owner Jim Cegielski Endorses Chris McDaniel in Mississippi Senate Race

I’m sure 76-year old Thad Cochran is a decent man. The senator has served Mississippi for 36 years in a manner which I’m positive he thought was in the best interest of the state.

What I don’t understand is why a senator with 36 years of experience and a six-term track record had to resort to terribly misleading negative television commercials targeting one of the Republican party’s bright young stars. After 36 years, shouldn’t you be able to wow the voting public with your decades of accomplishments? And why, at 76-years old, would a career politician want to keep his Senate seat so badly that he would stoop to running ridiculously twisted TV ads that he knows darn well are far from truthful.

Now, don’t get the impression that I’m coming to the defense of a close friend. I’m not. I only know Chris as a friendly acquaintance, mostly from passing him in downtown Laurel, where we have both worked for years. I’ve always found him to be friendly and personable but we have never once “hung out,” went fishing, shared a beer or went roller skating.

However, the one thing I do absolutely know about Chris McDaniel from many years of listening to his radio show and for the seven years that we have covered him for this newspaper is that he is an unwavering conservative to the core of his being. Cochran attack ads that claim otherwise are complete poppycock.

And why, at 76-years old, would he need a real job? Pension or no, he should easily have enough saved up to retire and spend the rest of his days protecting his lawn from the neighborhood kids.
