A year ago I wrote about how extreme right-wing rhetoric against the Common Core State Standards was clouding a substantive debate about the Common Core State Standards initiative. Now a report by the Southern Poverty Law Center details how right-wing extremists are using Core opposition are using conspiracy theories and misinformation to undermine the very notion of public education.
The report, called Public Schools in the Crosshairs: Far-Right Propaganda and the Common Core State Standards, distinguishes between legitimate criticism of the standards which comes from various points on the political spectrum and the right-wing campaign to cast the initiative as a nefarious plot by liberals to turn public schools into anti-American, anti-God indoctrination camps that churn out submissive automatons who will unquestionably serve the interests of the government and big business.
This campaign, it says, is really a proxy for a broader assault on public education itself and is coming at a time when public schools have been weakened by funding cuts, vitriolic political attacks on teachers and their unions, and state programs to privatize schools through vouchers, charter schools and other school choice measures.

Wait a minute!!
I thought that 88 was codeword for HH=HeilHitler.
This is just too good.
Washington ComPost composting more manure for the unwashed masses.
As a libertarian, I oppose government education. It ought to be shut down. See my tagline.
There was a woman on "Fox & Friends" this morning (a former school board member from Texas) who calls Common Core "Obama Core."
The Chicago Teachers union and the NY State teachers union are both anti-common core now. But, if you come out as anti-common core, then you MUST be attacking teachers! or something.
It isn’t a public education, it’s a government education, taught by government operatives only. Try waltzing into a government school like a public park and you’ll find out quick how jackboot public it is.
Thanks for the cheat sheet. I never got one. My dad and myself were both math majors and routinely scratch our heads over my daughters 1st grade math homework. Had to write on several of her math assignments that the question made no sense at all.
That tends to happen when the NEA uses its influence to turn U.S. education into

Do A, get B. If you'd done C, you'd have gotten D and E instead -- but no, you had to be good little Communist Long Marchers, didn't you?
Yeah, I bet you were stopped post haste. It is considered a breach of security for anyone to randomly enter the building during school hours. That's kind of a common sense thing...

Ridiculous comment-—public buildings aren’t accessible to the public 24/7.

The 60's really turned the tide. Most tenured college profs are 60's radicals and haven't had an original thought since then---because they figured it out about 1963, KNEW they had all the answers and proceeded from there to trash the US, quit teaching any history and pursued the goal of brainwashing every student.
Horribly, they had a huge success rate.As a recent quote from a Polish minister goes--paraphrased--The problem with the US is not Barack Obama. Rather, it is the citizenry that elected a Barack Obama.
How can we ever have the country we once had of freedom, upward mobility, responsibility, laws that are Constitutional and followed, family mores, etc., with the self centered sheeple standing around with one hand out for their "deserved and rightful" freebies, and the other hand texting a friend or posting on facebook, while the brain spins aimlessly.

Valerie Strauss is a commie punk.
The Chicago teacher’s union came out against common core, and they are far to the left.
Absolutely. Every teacher in America is against it. For the same reason the far right is against it. Neither group wants for kids to learn ANYTHING in school.
So, a report by left wing extremists is a credible source? Right.
Can we Southerners get a chapter if that “Northern Prosperity Law Center”?
The other outfit, SPLC, is nothing but a bunch of meddlin’ Yankee carpet-baggers who showed up uninvited!
(no offense to all you Yankee conservatives... unless your name happens to be Sherman.)
