One of my favorite old movies: “In The Shoes of the Fisherman”. A unique Pope does just that - Pledges all the wealth of the Catholic Church to feed the Hungry.
And then what? What happens after all the money raised from the sold goods is then used? Does that eliminate all the hunger, all the poverty in the world?
No my friends...the poor will still be there. Poverty and squalor will still be there. As someone suggested in a recent column, "what if some Islamic group--under an anonymous front--buys Michaelangelo's Pieta, and then promptly smashes it to bits?"
Sure, they'll buy it for a relatively paltry sum, 50 million, 100 million...blood money from who knows what venture, but then where will be? A priceless work of art, reduced to bits.
