He is mistaken in his interpretation of what the Pope is saying.
Subsidiarity: going to the smallest entity possible for assistance, for example, your neighbor, neighborhood, local church, local agencies such as St. Vincent de Paul Society.
Michael, please read up on subsidiarity -- notice I didn't say subsidies! In other words, get educated!

**Savage’s response: “It’s Karl Marx in a papal outfit.” **
Not true. He is misinterpreting the Pope’s words, as are other media.
Sounds like a fine idea. Sell the papal bling for starters... that alone should be worth million$.
The Catholic Church supports literally tens of thousands of hospitals, universities, elementary schools, and charitable homes throughout the world. In India alone, there are 13000 Catholic elementary and high schools, 400 colleges and 500 technical schools.
The fact is that the Catholic Church is by far the largest charitable organization on earth.
Hey Savage those works of art were given to God for all ages. He has title to them. Talk to Him.
Pfff. I have even less patience for Michael Weiner “Savage” than I have for Pope Francis.
Sell the Vatican to the Muslims, they can turn it into a mosque. Would that make you happy? The treasures of the Church are the treasures of Western Civilization and have been enjoyed for centuries. Selling them to “cure” poverty would be short-sighted and ineffectual. That said, the pope should be exhorting Christians, not governments, to minister to the poor.
Mike has a point, but it’s silly. The wealth of the Vatican city/state is $3 billion. For comparison purposes, Harvard’s endowment is $35 billion. And the Vatican’s administrative staff is smaller than that of Notre Dame University.
Local parishes are locally owned and administered, and subject to the local bishop.
It is vitally important that the Vatican learn a simple truth: that socialism is an atheist *parody* of Christianity, so embracing what socialism mimics in Christianity is a dire mistake.
According to Catholic demonologies, when Lucifer and the other angels were cast from Heaven into Hell, they decided to try to duplicate Heaven in Hell. But like socialism, it is a *parody*, also based in evil.
Should Heaven seek ecumenism with Hell? Of course not.
Neither should the church seek ecumenism with socialism, for much the same reason.
Heaven pursues the souls of the righteous, but so does Hell. This does not mean they have a common goal, no ground where they meet in agreement. No shared purpose.
If socialism offers to help the poor, it is not ever done for the same reason that the church tries to help the poor. Help offered by evil is never helpful, but leads to ruination. So the church should never confuse what it does, or why, with the actions of those who are not righteous.
Sounds fair to me. But I hear that he has led by example, eschewing many of the luxury trappings available to him.
But note that Savage referenced Vatican INCOME, not Vatican WEALTH. Was that just an oversight?
If Mike really cares about not encouraging leftism, he could start at home and maybe not endorse leftists for California state office.
The Vatican can get creative when it comes to moneymaking. They can host an upcoming WrestleMania, for example.
I encourage any interested party to read the entire statement, which is short, in its full context.
I think one may find it a bit different that what it has been represented to be.

Every day, the Catholic Church feeds, clothes, shelters, and educates more people than any other organization in the world.
But I guess Savage doesn’t care about that.
That was my first thought, too.
