Sen. Rand Paul: GOP's voter ID push "completely crazy"
CBS News ^ | May 10, 2014, 2:03 PM | Jake Miller

Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., condemned his party's push for voter identification laws as "completely crazy" Friday, saying it's "wrong for Republicans to go too crazy on this issue because it's offending people."

The comments, delivered during an interview with The New York Times, make Paul the most prominent member of the GOP to speak out against a crusade that has energized the Republican base but alienated some of the young and minority voters the party hopes to court.

Notably, Paul disputed the political wisdom behind voter ID laws, but he did not question their substance or merit. He's previously said it is reasonable for states to require voters to present identification before casting a ballot.

The courts have put voter ID laws on hold in three states so far, with a federal court saying the rules in Texas imposed "unforgiving burdens" on... Thirty states have instituted voter ID requirements in recent years, though several laws have recently been struck down by federal and state courts.

Republicans, who have been the driving force behind the new laws, say they're protecting the integrity of elections by preventing voter fraud. Democrats, though, say there's no evidence of widespread voter impersonation or other forms of fraud. Many spy a more sinister motive, accusing Republicans of trying to depress turnout among students, African-Americans and other groups that lean Democratic and are more likely to lack a photo ID.

Paul, who has acknowledged that he is weighing a presidential bid in 2016, has urged his party to expand its appeal, and he has reached out in recent months to groups that don't traditionally align with the GOP.

Totally on gut feel here, but I think Cruz will come out of the amnesty closet one day. On that day a whole bunch of Freepers will be going nuts....

RE :”Seems Rand Paul does not want to be POTUS, this position takes him out of any serious thought of contention.
Ted Cruz 2016’

I come to the opposite conclusion, that all this compassionate (two sided) flowery talk by Rand is about him wanting to be the nominee.

That is how he has has got himself boosted in the GOP polls.

`voter fraud, democrats’

“I’ve voted for Obama six times - Daily Kos
www.dailykos.com/.../2012/11/.../-I-ve-voted-for-Obama-six-ti...
Nov 5, 2012 - ... Obama six times. I voted for him four times in 2008 and twice in 2012. ... By this time, there were only Clinton and Obama supporters.”

The `rats are gloating over their multiple voters (and officials cited for contempt), and Rand is worried about hurting their feelings.

So, he’s saying that voter ID laws make sense, but we shouldn’t push them because we’ll get beat up by the media.

But, guess what, we’ll get beat up by the media regardless. That’s what these guys never seem to understand, at least once they get comfortable in Washington, D.C.

Probably the same people talked to Paul as talked to Rubio. They both have been "advised" that the royal road to the White House is down the middle. Neither one will get there.

“After all, we don’t need no stinkin’ IDs...to get beer, to fly on planes, to get into my workplace, to drive a car.”

Agreed!

Just a few notes on Rand Paul:

4-23-14, Primary sponsor for Life at Conception bill BUT THEN tells CNN there are THOUSANDS of exceptions.
4-26-14, Claims voter fraud is overemphasized.
5-10-14, Wants to give right to vote back to blacks who have a felony conviction.

If this is accurately reported, Rand Paul has lost his mind.

it would not be unusual for an inaccuracy that negatively affects a Republican or conservative to be repeated, but in this case I'm sad to say it appears accurate.

Why don’t you wait until that happens, rather than keep posting it as fact, over and over?

When I argue that we must control/defend our national borders, they howl "statist!"

I guess they don't comprehend that border security is one of the "State" duties.

IMO, Voter ID requirements are essential

And, they're very reasonable. There shouldn't be anything controversial about requiring people to have some verification of who they are, in order to vote. In states that have Voter ID laws, they even provide ID for those that don't drive, or can't otherwise afford an ID.

In fairness, I don't recall him restricting the restoring of felons' voting rights to blacks.

Somewho, being carded to purchase beer when I was age 60 always flattered me. Indeed, long ago when I was in college, we’d have a Mpms’ Day once a year. The smart bar tenders all flattered the moms by carding them.
