College football star Michael Sam and the St. Louis Rams made history Saturday night when the team made him the first openly-gay player ever drafted by a National Football League team. The highly decorated defensive end was drafted in the seventh round, 249th overall, and famously kissed boyfriend Vito Cammisano after smashing cake in his face on national television. Sam was named as both an All-American and the SEC Defensive player of the year after a stellar senior campaign last season for the University of Missouri but saw his draft stock plummet after a poor showing at the scouting combine earlier this year.
Sam was shown on television crying as he received the phone call notifying him he would indeed be an NFL player, he then kissed Cammisano before they hugged and cried tears of joy. His partner was identified by first name only by OutSports before The Verge's Tim Carmody reported his full name shortly after. 'Thank you to the St. Louis Rams and the whole city of St. Louis. I'm using every once of this to achieve greatness!!' The grateful player tweeted shortly after being picked. 'He’s a good football player,’ Rams coach Jeff Fisher told NFL Network just after the pick was announced. ‘We got a good football player… I’m excited about the possibility of adding him to our defensive front. 'I’m excited to get him on the practice field and get him going.' Sam also spoke about the possibility of detractors and distractions during a Saturday press call with reporters. 'Hey, are there going to be idiots out there and say some stupid stuff? Yeah,' Sam said. 'I'm not worried about that.'

Beyond the social issue....he’s a marginal two-star player who will likely be around for five years max, and might get fifteen starts over that period. The vast majority of guys coming into the NFL today...usually don’t get past their first contract. Other than writing a book over his experience, and maybe getting some Today Show permanent position gig by 2020...there’s not much to see here.

I read one article, really schmaltzy, calling this one of the greatest events in NFL history even if he never plays a down in the NFL.
What is funny is I think the author indeed is still a bit homophobic because the author has the idea that this is significant since football is such a macho sport. Which to me is sort of like saying Sissies don’t play it... but here we have a “gay” getting drafted.

I almost wonder if the Rams didn’t have their arms twisted by the honchos of the NFL. It wouldn’t look good to leave the only openly gay player unpicked.
as Rosanne rosanadana used to say, its always something. sam, sterling, paula dean, gay marriage, reparations, etc etc etc. all I have to say is, when the first good ol’ boy goes to the store to buy bread for his kids, only to find the shelves as empty, cold and gray as those in the old eastern block, this poop will end.
He'll be cut by the Rams and bounce around the developmental league for a while, but will probably never play in a regular season game. But that's not the point - the point is to get the homo agenda into the No Fag League and get us to accept it.
I agree. Sam is not a particularly good football player. Outside of the media hype about him being gay, there’s nothing at all special about him as a player.
In fact, I’d say were it not for the media hype, there would be a pretty good chance of Sam getting cut in training. He’s just not all that good, and isn’t likely to develop into anything more than that.
As it is, I think he’ll be almost guaranteed a spot on the roster, and possibly get more playing time than he warrants, simply for the PR angle or keep the gay activists at bay.
I doubt if the Rams got their arm twisted on this episode. Consider it from a business prospective. Ed Jones Stadium holds 66,000 fans of the Rams. For 2013, the Ed Jones Stadium placed #31 of the 32 NFL teams for the eight games played in the stadium....with average attendance of 56,957 (ESPN numbers).
That means there’s nine thousand empty seats on an average game. Some draw more, some less. If you were management, you’d want to find some little low-cost gimmick which would put 1,000 more fans into the stadium for those eight games. I hate to suggesting hyping this guy and hoping that 1,000 more fans show up, who happen to be gay or bi-sexual....but that’s really the card that you’d want, and the contract he gets won’t be a fantastic number. You pay a reasonable price for a marginal player, get the 1,000 extra fans to show up for eight lousy games, and enjoy more profit. If you get 3,000 more fans....man, that’d be fantastic for the bottom line.
I should note that the Oakland Raiders are last in the league for home attendance (roughly 80-percent of the stadium filled for eight games). Max capacity is 63,000 and they really needed Sam probably more....if the intention was to fill the stadium and put another thousand fans at each home game.
The fact they are making this a matter of his sexual preferences rather than his talent or obtaining being chosen as a player...speaks volumes of how corrupt our media and society has become.
Likely he knew he isn’t that good and played the gay card accordingly.
IMO it’s not about talent or advancement in the world over all...it’s about how you can “win” without it when you know you aren’t measuring up.
The two teams you mention have been big losers in recent years, Raiders and Rams though the Rams really did have a decent team last year but fell short of making the playoffs. They played well in a number of their games. They did defeat Arizona in game I, they beat the Colts, Bears and Saints, not bad.
But for a number of years after Kurt Warner left, the Rams had one of the worse records in the NFL.
But they should be pretty good this year, in fact, they might be so good, I don’t know if they can play someone for “looks”, cosmetic purposes if the guy is not fullfilling his role as someone else on the squad could. Defense has to stop the other team.
There is probably a good chance “Sam” jerseys could be popular which is pitiful to me. Someone said he got a commercial deal too though I don’t know. I think someone might be bankrolling him some to go on this crusade. He went out to Las Vegas to celebrate with his boyfriend. Is this from the sponsorship deal if it exists? Or is someone funding him?
Good point Pepsi! I didn’t look at it that way. I was coming from the theory that the NFL did not want to deal with the fallout from the LGBT mafia, the way other companies have. But you are probably right - there may be a bunch more people in their seats at the games.
