Kind of what Tarantino's Django movie was.
The klan hood scene was even an attempt at trying to play up "Blazing Saddles" type humor.

You are correct. While Blazing Saddles was a very funny movie, it projected the liberal myth of evil, nasty white people and the angelic, perfect black person. Most films and tv shows of that day were very p.c. in that regard, and Brooks’s film was no exception.
