EARTH CITY, Mo. -- Michael Sam made history Saturday afternoon, as the St. Louis Rams made him the 249th overall choice in the 2014 NFL draft.
The Missouri defensive end becomes the first openly gay player to be drafted in league history and seeks to be the first openly gay player ever to play in the NFL. Video of Sam receiving the call from the Rams and coach Jeff Fisher revealed the player's emotion while surrounded by friends, family and his boyfriend.
"In a world of diversity we live in, I am honored to be a part of this," Fisher told ESPN.
"I don't want it to become an unusual distraction for his teammates but him as well," Fisher added.

It’s ridiculous that Sam is being given so much ink and airtime for announcing he was gay a few months ago. He may be the first OPENLY gay to be drafted by the NFL, but he’s not the first gay to be so drafted.
There are gays in all major sports, the NFL, MLB, NHL and NBA; as well as lesser sports like soccer, track, swimming, diving, gymnastics, etc. MOST just choose to keep their sexual preferences private.
Jackie Robinson moments only work if the guy is an exceptional performer.
It has been a disaster with Obama (”first ‘Black’ president”)
and
the Sam clown has terrible scouting reports. He will be cut unless team pressured to keep him.
Another thing, if Sam was drafted as, for lack of better words, charity-reasons, if Michael Sam did not really deserve his pick in the draft and I can’t judge that, it would mean he would have taken the place of another aspiring football player. As I said, I don’t know that but it might be worth considering. As it stands, I suppose what are called “unsigned free agents” still go to camp to try out. I have seen a few lists of “unsigned free agents”.
and oil
Yeah LA has always been such a great NFL city...............
Rams in Pink in November
Bu-wa-ha-haaa
A seventh round pick is just a small step above un drafted free agent. There’s no guaranteed money. They still have to make the team and few do and mostly on special teams. Sam won’t be a ST player.
Thanks. We will see how this goes but it is certainly an unwanted distraction for me and will be all training camp at least. Glad this isn't going on with my team.
Barely competent is a bit harsh. He was SEC Defensive Player of the Year. The kid could play in the best conference in college football. But a lot of great college players aren’t a great fit for the NFL. But to say “barely competent” is pretty ridiculous.
Indeed, it is harsh. I know of one case where a player was drafted from a very unknown college so he didn't even play in one of the big conferences.
Still, I heard some sort of rundown on Sam's stats, his more stellar games were against teams like Vanderbilt I think I heard but he did have a top play in the Cotton Bowl, I guess the Tigers may have won with help of that play.
I think Bill Clinton was the "first black President", maybe Obama can settle for being the "first gay President".
This ain’t your grandfathers Vandy. They were a good team last year. Beat UGA at home and went to another bowl game.
Sam had 3 sacks against Vamdy. 3 more against Florida (they were ranked in that game and before they imploded) and had three tackles for loss against South Carolina when they were a top 10 team.
And there are dozens of players from small schools in the NFL. That’s no surprise at all.
There is no doubt Obama is the first gay president. None.
Agree. That’s why I put “Black” in quotes since Bambi is Mixed or biracial or mulatto. He is 100% queer.
