Russian Strategic Bombers On West Coast: Did They Take Down LAX Traffic Control Systems?
SHTFplan.com ^ | 5/6/14 | Mac Slavo

With the situation in the Ukraine escalating and the US continuing to call for sanctions against Russia’s financial and political elite, Vladimir Putin is now not only mobilizing tens of thousands of troops on his Western front, but sending intercontinental strategic bombers across the Pacific Ocean. According to the US military, it’s the first time since the cold war that Russia’s incursions have come this close to America.

What’s even more alarming is that Russia is making it clear that any attack on the Motherland would likely lead to widespread bombardment of western interests. Nuclear capable Russian bombers have been spotted all over the world as of late including in Guam, Japan, South Korea and Europe.

Gen. Herbert Carlisle, Commander of United States Air Forces in the Pacific, acknowledged a significant increase in the activities by Russian long-range strategic aircraft flying along the California coast.

There was no comment about whether the aircraft were nuclear capable, but it has not been since the Cold War ended in the early 1990s that Russian patrols have skirted the West Coast and California.

Other than fleets of Russian bombers making passes in close proximity to U.S. interests, the military hasn’t reported anything else out of the ordinary.

But last week something weird happened in Los Angeles and it likely involved a high altitude fly over.

Air traffic controllers at Los Angeles LAX airport reported that their computer systems were overwhelmed and crashed, leading to hundreds of flight delays and cancellations across the country. According to an NBC News investigation the outage was caused by the flyover of a U-2 spy plane. Apparently the 1950′s class spy plane entered LAX airspace at about 60,000 feet and its jamming systems crashed not only the primary air traffic control systems used to monitor and direct commercial

Are we still flying the much older U2? Why retire the SR-71 and still fly its predecessor?

Could be cheaper that way, the SR-71 took a lot of maintenance and preparation for each flight, I'm sure the U2 is easier to run and maintain. That's my guess.

In some ways it makes more sense that a bear bomber using electronic measures would have shut down LAX than a U2. The U2 has flown around LAX space for years and for the system to ‘all of a sudden’ shut down due to a U2 flight is laughable. The USAF have waffled as to whether one was flying there. We have reports of the bears being seen and tracked off the west coast.

Unfortunately the guy on the left wants the rest of the Soviet Union (formerly known as Russia) under his control

Blame the U2? That would be typical. Is it credible? No. No U2 pilot would energize jamming pods (if they have them), over US airspace. Not ever.

I don't know who did it, why, or how - but I don't think it was us...

Don’t expect to find out. How did it go? GM is alive and Osama Bin Laden is dead.

There is very little risk to challenging the US anymore.

No idea. I only know about aircraft talking to SoCal at the time. At the time there were numerous flights reporting to SoCal that their on board GPS had gone down. We didn’t know about anything else at the time.

The source is me. I only know what was being said on the SoCal approach control frequency at the time. Numerous flights with GPS failure. For multiple airliners to lose GPS at the same time as a bogus story about a U2, makes anecdotal evidence more empirical than a “news story.”

If someone was jamming GPS there would be all kinds of ground devices having issues as well, unless the jamming was over the ocean and far enough out not to affect ground devices. Don’t forget, their US ground-based military tracking systems tracking those Russian aircraft that could also result in the inadvertent jamming of GPS signals. Civilian GPS signals are fairly weak.

~More likely it was a Russian Blackjack or Blinder bomber~

Blinder last flew in 1993. It coudn’t make from Russia to SoCal in it’s better days too.

The wages of weakness and unilateral disarmament. What's the Won going to do - draw another red line?

Putin, the Chinese and the jihadists are dragging him by his heels around the walls of the city, in the fashion of Hector.

Sorry....but I ain't buying your story.

Several reasons, but top two are..

There has been NO mention of it on any pilot forum.

There is NO WAY that multiple aircraft losing GPS signal simultaneously would not trigger grounding of aircraft, initiated by crews, companies, and FAA. NOBODY would take a chance on a recurrence without knowing the cause. Those groups will NOT cover up any gov't cause of loss of signal.

Sell your BS elsewhere.

There has been NO mention of it on any pilot forum. OK, so this is not a "pilot forum" - but I just mentioned it. I am an A320 Captain at the largest airline in the world (you figure it out). My first officer and many other crews on the frequency can attest to it.

Interesting thread....In Ukraine Putin jammed all communication lines for their military and why they were constantly saying they had no orders...none could get through.

The military has commented about Putins precision and execution of how he did that. So I would assume he must have quite an operation to have accomplished that.

Still, Ukraine's communications were pretty “old” so one would even question if Putin has the capability to do this in our country.
