For a couple of years the Chinese-language press in the U.S. has had stories about how it’s easy to find houses in Detroit going for less than $1000, and how Chinese at that price simply can’t justify not buying. One wonders where the would-be American buyers are, other than reading paranoid articles about Chinese takeovers.

There are American buyers but you don't hear much about them. Quicken has transferred some 2400 people and their families to Detroit over the past few years along with some other big companies.

My neighbor's grandson moved to Detroit from NY about 2 years ago and he really likes it. The same pay he made in NY goes a lot further in Detroit. He bought a decent house he couldn't have touched in NY and his neighbors are mostly coworkers who have really cleaned the neighborhood up. Quicken pays for private security to back of Detroit police in his neighborhood.

When it comes right down to it you won't find a freer large city in America. Detroit is an open carry stand your ground city with a police chief who supports it. There are no salt and sugar nazis. Its obviously no utopia but things are getting better.

OK, they buy the property for $1000, then what?

They spend another $50,000 fixing it up only to have their properties broken into every week. Is it worth the price and aggravation?
