Electrical Repair Rule Number One is SWITCH THE POWER OFF AT THE BREAKER BOX


#2. Test anyway (there may be more than one branch in the box).

#3. After testing, brush the back of your finger against the bare wire (if live, it will sting/tingle, but your twitch reflex will be away from the wire as your hand spasms closed.

#4. Avoid ladders, or have a helper. A major cause of electrical worker death/disability is the head injury from the fall following a zap.

I think I’ll avoid #3. But #2 and #4 are good reminders.

I have a friend who did electrical work in the Air Force. He was taught to never touch or grab a bare wire with an open hand for the reason you state.
