The trade advantages of being in the European Union single market are “imaginary” and have not helped British exports, according to a new report.

It claims the UK’s exports to Europe have grown at a slower rate than our trade with other leading countries outside the EU bloc, over the past four decades.

And the proportion of EU trade within Britain’s total exports of goods and services abroad, is no higher than when Britain joined the European Economic Community in 1973, at just over 60 percent.

Meanwhile, it points out that Britain’s trade with countries outside the EU—such Iceland, Norway and Switzerland—has increased enormously over the same period.

As a free trade pact EU would have worked, instead they set out to regulate everything.
Europeans already have overbearing governments, a whole new layer was just too much of a dream come true for all their bureaucrats.

A good pitch for the UK to leave the EU might be both freedom and liberty (from Brussels). This could well open the door to things like “food tourism”, with food products made in the UK that the bureaucrats have forbidden in the EU.

In fact, anytime anything is outlawed by Brussels, its production and sale should move to the UK. And to enjoy them, continentals would have to visit the UK.
