About the same time Bishop Robinson was leaving his family, our local parish priest was removed from his job for having an affair with a married woman, while he, himself, was married. He eventually had his Orders revoked, because he refused to break it off. A punishment handed down only twice in the history of the ECUSA.
Not to say he didn’t deserve it. He did defy his bishop and the national church. But his pattern of behavior was exactly the same as Bishop Robinson’s, save the one small fact that he took up with a married woman, while Bishop Robinson took up with a married man.
So while my parish priest gets drummed out of church, they make Robinson a Bishop.
Perverted thought: This could spawn a whole new trend - if you want to have an affair with a member of the opposite sex, get a "beard" of the same sex for cover.
None of us are without sin. The question is whether we will wallow in sin and celebrate the rejection of God's word or resist when we have the strength and repent when we fail. When a bishop is the one publicly wallowing in physical pleasure over God's word, and those actions are praised, that worries me.
