Former 8th District Congressman Jim Oberstar of Chisholm died in his sleep this morning. Oberstar, Minnesotas longest serving congressman, was 79.
The Oberstar family released this statement this morning:
We are heartbroken to share the news that Jim Oberstar has passed way. Jim was a loving husband, father, grandfather, friend and brother. While we mourn the loss of a good man, we also celebrate his life and his service. We ask for your thoughts and prayers, and understanding, at this very difficult time.
Oberstar, a Democrat, went to work for his predecessor, John Blatnik, in 1963 and succeeded him in the election of 1974. He rose to be chairman of the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee in 2006.
Oberstar was defeated in 2010 in a shocking defeat in the heavily Democratic district by former Republican U.S. Rep. Chip Cravaack. Cravaack was then defeated in 2012 by current Democratic Congressman Rick Nolan.
Oberstar was the son of an underground miner from Chisholm.
He is survived by his wife Jean, four children and eight grandchildren.
RIP. I am sorry for the family’s loss but he was a terrible crook in office.
Another paper butt demoncrat going to have his butt catch fire in hell. Condolences to the family and may Obama care help them in their grief.
First three replies to this thread say more about the posters than the congressman who died. Wow. You guys are mean and heartless.
Yah,and Barney Frank's sure to be spotted weeping at *my* gravesite.I refuse to weep for this clown for the *very* same reason my eyes were dry upon hearing of Mao Tse Tung's death...Ho Chi Minh's death...and Kim Il Sung's death.
Peas in a pod.
RIP.
