The two Republican lieutenant governor candidates, David Dewhurst and Dan Patrick, faced off Friday night in a runoff debate.
The debate took place at the studios of Houston Public Media.
The runoff is May 27. The latest polls show Dewhurst, the current lieutenant governor, far behind Patrick, a state senator.
Heres a look at the race from KUHF, Houstons public radio station:
It's unusual for the incumbent to be unseated, but Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst is as many as 20 points behind state Sen. Dan Patrick in the polls.

I believe you are correct.
Dewhurst also just “lent” himself $2 million to pay for a negative advertising campaign against Patrick that is running now.
But he still owes $1 million in unpaid bills to vendors from the campaign he lost to Cruz in 2012.
What a weasel.
Dewhurst, against Patrick, seems to be following his campaign strategy used against Cruz - get so mean and dirty that the whole electorate flees from you in revulsion.
As I understand it, the Lieutenant Governor’s office in Texas is a VERY powerful one. So this will be an excellent flushing of another RINO (Dewhurst) down the toilet.
Patrick is nothing to get excited about though. Has a long pattern of dropping bills like sanctuary, etc after the press cools off. Standing groups up, etc...I know of some very strong Tea Parties that are now backing Dewhurst.Neither though are worth getting excited about.
Maybe Dewhurst thought he’d “cruz” to an easy nomination.
Goodbye to another RINO.
“Neither though are worth getting excited about.”
When that is the case, go with the challenger.
I absolutely cannot understand why ANY conservative would support the despicable Dewhurst. He’s been stinking up the place for a long time and his flushing is long overdue.
I guess we’ll have to see about Patrick but I haven’t seen much negative about him.
“Patrick is nothing to get excited about though.”
I STRONGLY disagree with you. Dan Patrick will force the Texas senate to vote on bills that Dewhurst would never allow to come to the floor for One thing.
Depending on the Texas House Majority Leader election, Next year could be a very good year for lower taxes and education (Charter) school reform in Texas
I honestly don't keep up with all the Tea parties. Do you have any links to their statements?

Your understanding is correct.
No I don’t just my knowledge of activists on the ground in Austin a few sessions back when they were working with Patrick on a sanctuary bill...Judicial Watch guy was there to vet the language...bill was abandoned. Patrick then moved to work on the sonogram bill. I’m not worked up here about either candidate...it’s a pity Texans don’t have a better alternative.
Patrick isn’t perfect, but he is a major improvement. The Dewhurst/GOPe smear campaign is likely to make him much more committed to pushing conservative legislation through.
Sorry, hadn’t refreshed.
Patrick has been fighting to end the BLOCKER POLICY in the State Senate, and WILL END IT if elected Lt. Governor.
That one policy allows ONE THIRD of the Senate to block ANY BILL from consideration and has been abused by Democrats NON-STOP since Dewhurst became Lt. Governor, virtually paralyzing state government, when Republicans have a lock on EVERYTHING related to being in power.
There is a REASON why we STILL have Sanctuary Cities, the Texas DREAM ACT, no school vouchers, and many other liberal policies here, and Dewhurst is a HUGE PART of that problem (along with Perry and the House Speaker). And we only got Voter ID a couple of years ago. These are not hard issues for conservatives, but they GET BLOCKED by Dewhurst working with the Democrats.
But the bottom line, in this run-off is that Dewhurst WILL LOSE, and at this point, given his smear campaign, he seems more interested in trying to in trying to have a DEMOCRAT win that seat.
“...its a pity Texans dont have a better alternative.”
We will see. He’s in a State Senate that is paralyzed by its leadership and the governor and no matter what one says about Patrick, he WILL NOT carry water for the Establishment, not at all. Stuff will get voted on by the Senate, finally, and hopefully Texas will be able to join other Republican states in passing conservative legislation.
I agree that Patrick has the upper hand here...I just do not find him trustworthy having communicated with many activists on different issues. People fighting back fed control via COMMON CORE are PARTICULARLY against Patrick. However, those of us feeling distressed and depressed about our choices will just have to watch and observe. I don’t plan on voting in the runoff. It’s not worth my gas or time.
Magna Carta
I find you untrustworthy. Are you a Leftwing provocateur? Do you love Wendy?
The Common Core issue is a Dewhurst / Teacher Union issue along with the Texas house Speaker. Just another reason to get rid of Dewhurst and replace him with a competent small g’ment pro America Texan. Even if he was not born in Texas.
