The American economy gained steam in April, adding 288,000 jobs, while the unemployment rate fell to 6.3 percent, the lowest level since September 2008.
After a sharp slowdown in December and January, and a modest improvement since then, economists had been forecasting a healthy gain for April as consumer and business activity rose in tandem with temperatures in many parts of the country.
But the good news was tempered by a drop of 806,000 in the number of Americans in the labor force, pushing the labor participation rate down sharply. And despite the fall in joblessness, average hourly earnings did not rise at all.
The consensus among economists polled by Bloomberg before the Labor Departments announcement Friday morning called for an increase of 218,000 in nonfarm payrolls, with the unemployment rate falling by 0.1 percent to 6.6 percent.
To be sure, month-to-month swings in hiring are a snapshot of the economy, rather than a portrait, and frequently blur.

Make it feasible, and it will happen. Nobody has to force a market. That is a communist idea.
China ate our lunch.
While we were throwing our own lunch away. Both happened.
That is not my point.
My point is, we need to bring jobs back here to America.
Stop buying everything imported. For crying out loud. A single generation ago, we were head and shoulders ahead of the entire planet.
This year, we will be passed by China.
THIS YEAR, according to what I heard yesterday.
Wake up people.
We have 240,000,000 adults in this country.
Zero claims unemployment at 6.8% with 9.8 million out of work. That means they claim 155 million people have jobs, which gives 84 million people do not want jobs, according to Zero.
Zero never states how many people have jobs. He only states percentage increase or decrease for women, or men, or blacks, etc, but NEVER does he claim how many people have jobs.
However, we also know from other numbers that only 97 million people have jobs. Zero claims those other 58 million extra people (155 - 97 = 58) are people with two or more jobs and he counts their jobs as people. Meaning, if a person has two jobs then he counts two people as having a job.
If we add back those 58 million missing people, even using his number that 6.3% represents 9.8 million people, we get 9.8 + 58 = 67.8 million people do not have jobs and that equals 44% unemployment.
We have 44% unemployment, and that is using Zero numbers and not lying about who has a job.
Why don’t YOU wake up and realize there is no lid on God’s blessings.
China+US is not a zero sum game.
Both could play together to show God’s glory on earth. There’s room to grow the pie. The trouble was that we let China make our pie and were satisfied.
Does anyone have the official U6 unemployment figures? I think those portray a far more accurate picture of the current unemployment rate than the increasingly outdated and bogus U3 barometer that the federal government and media rely on. When people drop out of the labor force, the U3 no longer counts them as unemployed. So technically, we could bring the U3 unemployment rate all the way down to 0% if EVERY American were to quit working and go on welfare! Talk about a worthless indicator!
Last year America sold China 122 billion worth of goods/services.
Last year China sold America 440 billion worth of goods/services.
Just saying.
The GOP answer should be to rip the veil off the claimed unemployment numbers... that’s a measure which due to new conditions doesn’t approach what it used to approach. People have QUIT OUT in large numbers. This is a recipe for DEATH.
And what did America do for ITSELF?
Precious little. It sat there in its government chains and welcomed the Chinese bread and circuses.
I mean it’s a shame to America when even China is more free (in some senses) than it is.
Dude! I've done it! What more do you want!
Thanks a lot.
Really. Now how about you and other Americans look at where what you are buying, is made.
People it matters.
I don't buy. I steal.
The US people could try to totally boycott China (good luck) and still the golden goose would be wheezing in its heavy government chains. TAKE THE CHAINS OFF THE GOOSE.

The difference between +.1% and anything negative is so infinitesimal that the margin of error puts negative growth not just as a possibility, but a probability, given the propensity of this admin to fudge the numbers to keep themselves from looking bad.

Right you are... In fact, I find it more than a little coincidental (”convenient” would probably be a better word) that the GDP number just so *happened* to come in a hair over 0% which allows the tyrannical Oba-mao regime to dodge any talk of the economy officially being in the midst of another recession since most economists define one as two consecutive quarters of negative GDP growth.
By the way, your tagline is one of my very favorites here on FR!
Look at what Chinese taxes are, for one thing.
DESPITE official Communism, the tax bite is SMALLER than our ostensibly “FREE” country.
Surely a government of a “FREE” country ought to be more economical than a government of a Communist one!
America, be ashamed, weep, then get those government drones doing actual productive work again. In the private sector. With far less taxes on them.
All I am saying is, we need to do both.
We need to oppose interference in the economy by the government.
But we also, badly need to return manufacturing to America.
You know that group of 806,000 Americans that magically decided to not work anymore, but not be counted as "unemployed" anymore? That's the same number of citizens as the total who are still called "unemployed" in the smallest 19 states combined (AK 24k, DE 26, HI 30, IA 74, ID 41, KS 73, ME 44, MT 26, NE 36, NH 35, ND 10, NM 62, OK 90, RI 50, SD 16, UT 57, VT 13, WV 47, WY 13)...
that's ~767,000... you still need more than a third of Mississippi's 94,000 to make up the rest of the 806,000...
or just call it all of the unemployed in New York state, plus Minnesota.
Or Ohio plus Pennsylvania...
Or Texas plus Kansas...
Either way. All gone. *poof!* In one month.
The GDP is of course denominated in the dollars of its year. Not according to anything fixed like a given quantity of gold or whatever.
Manufacturing AND services, they are both productive of good things.
