Mayor Ed Murray delivered a major May Day victory for Seattles low-wage workers on Thursday, with a plan that will move big business and small business to a $15-an-hour minimum wage, over a sliding scale of three to seven years.
In seven years, the minimum-wage worker in Seattle will earn $6,200 more than a minimum-wage worker elsewhere in Washington, assuming a 30-hour week, Murray said. He described unveiling of the plan as an historic moment for Seattle.
A social gospel Catholic, Murray quoted Pope Francis on social justice and income inequality. He was followed shortly to the podium by ultra liberal Seattle City Councilman Nick Licata. Quoting the late radical organizer Saul Alinsky, and pledged: I will work with colleagues to pass this proposal.
No industry, organization or class of employer is exempt, said Murray. He described the plan as middle out, a phrase pioneered by Seattle entrepreneur Nick Hanauer and author Eric Liu to describe the goal of boosting Americas beleaguered middle class.

Why not $30?
May Day Marxism Seattle style.
Fools!
I predict a massive sucking sound as businesses that hire primarily minimum wage employees relocated to just outside of the city limits.
Yet again, politicians meddling where they have no business meddling.
The law of unintended consequences will shortly take hold, driving up unemployment rates and increasing automation.
But hey, ignorant leftist politicians and their know-nothing, low information voter base mean well.
I’ve called them “solutionists” for 30 years. I’ll stick by that. They will try anything but letting you figure it out for yourself.
The name Murray in Washington must be the equivalent of the name Ryan in Illinois.
Only $15? Cheap bastards. Why not $50 / hr to start with. In Seattle, that’s barely a “living wage”.
Seattle will be Detroit in 10 years.
Pope Francis and Saul Alinsky in the same breath. That about sums up the catholic Church today. Whatever happened to “Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s....”
Assuming a 30 hr week?
How about 500/hour minimum, and a 1/4 hour week?
They get the high wage, and don’t spend enough time on the job to screw it up.
Liberals really aren’t of this world. Obviously none of them have ever owned a business. They think that businesses have infinite money and that they exploit employees.
This is hilarious. I want to see the price of a hamburger there. If they are still allowed to eat meat, that is...
Seattle declares bankruptcy in 3...2...1...
$30?
You greedy, unfeeling capitalist pig.
Followed by Federal bailout.
They will add a new lineitem to their bills, “Min Wage fee”. So, not only will business leave, but so will the consumers, bith inside and outside Seattle.
These people are so ignorant that they believe that you raise the wages to $15.00 and that’s it!
No, it’s not. For every $1.00 in wage increase the employer has an increase (per hour) in:
Matching Social Security @ 50% based upon withholding
.
Increased unemployment insurance based on payroll.
Increased workman’s compensation based on payroll.
Increased liability insurance based upon payroll (to insure the employer can survive if sued by an employee for a host of government manufactured traps such as gender discrimination, a wrong word being said and a host of other “traps.”
And a host of other increases in city, state, and federal costs based upon payroll.
I wonder how the employer will deal with these increases in the cost of employment? Would it be an increase in the price of product or service? NAW! Couldn’t be.
