TRAGIC TO MAGIC, 15 YEARS LATER (remove Chick Hearn statue for his comment?)
highbeam.com ^ | 2006

DFU NOTE: the comment below by Chick Hearn should spark outrage by the LGBT or LBGT or LTGB or in whatever order the initials are placed. Magic did not get the HIV virus "the wrong way." That is outrageous. We all know that "the wrong way" is now celebrated on television, in movies, in parades and "pride" festivals, and even discussed as being wonderful in our kindergartens. So it is time to do what is right. If black outrage can cause Donald Sterling to lose his team, Chick Hearn's comment should cause the gay community to demand that his statue be removed from the front of Staples Center. Come on, gays. Go for it. This is the country in which we now live. Maybe someone could start an online petition and force the White House to comment.

Byline: TOM HOFFARTH MEDIA

The way ESPN's Dan Patrick described it at 3:05 p.m. on Nov. 7, 1991, was simple: ``We interrupt our regularly scheduled program to bring you perhaps the biggest sports related story of our time.''

Magic Johnson was going to die, a statistic no sports reporter was used to dealing with.

Misinform-ation ensued.

Magic had a ``full-blown case of AIDS,'' KCBS Channel 2 sportscaster Keith Olbermann reported. He later admitted that two sources within the team who confused the HIV virus with AIDS persuaded him to go with that information.

Lakers broadcaster Chick Hearn, during an interview with a Prime Ticket reporter, chastised those who were ``starting silly rumors about how (Magic) got AIDS ... don't think the wrong way ... they're not true and believe me, if any one else tells you, you deny it.''

Unsettled reporters asked questions about Johnson's prognosis of complete recovery, while viewers at home around the world on CNN watched it all unfold live. …

Don’t Judge Hearn Merely by Latest Slip of Tongue

Chick Hearn made a mistake Tuesday night, as disturbing as the one Howard Cosell made when he called the Washington Redskins’ smurfish wide receiver, Alvin Garrett, a “little monkey.”

In his simulcast of the Laker-Clipper game from the Pond, Hearn reacted to Bo Outlaw’s hanging on the rim for several seconds by saying he was “up there so long he could have eaten a banana.”

Oops. Another reason to remove his statue.

So, there are “right ways” and “wrong ways” to get AIDS? Who knew? And no nonsense about blood transfusions. The donor still got it the wrong way.

I called my kids little monkeys when they were young. That’s offensive?
They acted like monkeys at the time.

Ummm... not too certain about your sources for this, doug, but -is this a transcript? Far as I know, KCBS is an AM radio station. KNTV is channel 11, KRON is channel 4, KPIX is channel 5, and KTVU is channel 2. Just to name a few.

I could be off a bit, as it has been some time since I was last in the Bay Area, but... perhaps a transcription error? This is about the second time in a few days that I have heard KCBS being referred to as TV Channel 2. They've changed?

What made you think this was from the Bay Area? KCBS is channel 2 in Los Angeles, where Magic played.

Really? OK, well, I did not know that a station's call letters could be assigned to another station regardless of how or where they were broadcasting from. Another tidbit of information to consider at a later date.

I looked at it from a Ham Radio perspective, where your call letters were yours, period. Did not know that the FCC allowed identical call letters to exist depending upon other criteria. First I heard of it, though. OK, Doug, thanks for the info!
