Saying President Barack Obama hasnt been tough enough on Russia, a high-powered group of Republican senators introduced legislation on Wednesday aimed at imposing new sanctions on Moscow over its actions in Ukraine.
Rather than react to events as they unfold, which has been the policy of this administration, we need to inflict more direct consequences on Russia prior to Vladimir Putin taking additional steps that will be very difficult to undo, said Bob Corker of Tennessee, the top GOP member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, who drafted the measure.
The congressional push for a harder line on Russia comes with Obama set to welcome German Chancellor Angela Merkel, one of his key partners on Ukraine, to the White House on Friday.

The Russian Aggression Prevention Act of 2014 is cosponsored by Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.), Kelly Ayotte (R-N.H.), Lamar Alexander (R-Tn.), John Hoeven (R-N.D.), Roy Blunt (R-Mo.), Marco Rubio (R-Fl.), John McCain (R-Az.), John Cornyn (R-Texas), Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.), Mark Kirk (R-Il.), John Barrasso (R-Wy.), Jim Risch (R-Id.), Dan Coats (R-In.), Pat Roberts (R-Ks.), Johnny Isakson (R-Ga.), Jim Inhofe (R-Ok.), Rob Portman (R-Oh.), Orrin Hatch (R-Ut.), John Thune (R-.S.D.) and Jeff Flake (R-Az.).
The Ukraine/Russia conflict is being used as a diversion by those in DC and the wussy Repubicans are playing it like they have forgotten that we common Americans know our real and worst enemy is in the WH.
EXACTLY my thinking.
Apparently some here like Obama's position of not sending arms to Ukraine.
Reagan's legacy squandered.
Doing what?
See, “we should be doing something” leads senators and pinheads in the State Dep’t to do some really stupid things. When citizens call them out and say “you’re doing something stupid!” they reply
“Well, you said ‘we should do something!’ and this is ‘something’, so we’re doing it.”
We should be doing nothing at this point, because it is:
a) quite obvious we don’t fully know or understand what is going on,
b) even more obvious we don’t have people in the executive branch right now who understand Putin
c) and it is even more obvious that we have no logistics in place to deal with the Russian threat of shutting off energy exports to western Europe.
In short, we have no good options to “do something.” What is being proposed now is just chum for the western press, and won’t result in anything other than annoying Ivan. It isn’t going to stop anything from happening.
Doing something futile and pointless is the action of the impotent. Doing nothing and maintaining an air of uncertainty over what we’d do is the stronger position.
You can bet that American 'advisers' will be in the Ukraine!
The fact is that America has it’s limits, we don’t have any influence on what occurs in the Ukraine.
If it's going on we know that it's about Western banking interests and their political stooges trying to maintain control so that they can continue stealing what isn't nailed down. The Chinese and Russians are getting uppity about continuing to accept our bad paper. Having said that, the Chinese and Russian leaders are scum too. Can't think of an American kid I know that I want to die so that the financial interests can continue to sell bets on the quality of Chicago paper or Greek paper or whatever byzantine scam they're trying to pull off.
The only thing we should be doing is watching water seek it’s own level and accepting where it settles.
Reagan would be rolling over in his grave, if he could read this website’s post.
Bowing down to a pathetic rogue and weakened Russia.
If you truly believe that allowing Russia to steam roll weaker nations is in the interests of the United States, you are willfully ignorant on the subject.
It is absolutely in our interest to counter Russia. And the incessant moaning about “sending our troops”, when all the Republicans want to do is produce more serious economic sanctions...is a weak straw man argument from people who are either not conservative or are Russian sympathizing Useful Idiots.
If you believe we should go to WW3 over an issue started or at least massively inflamed by Obama’s State Dept running an Occupy Ukraine scam, you need your head examined.
But if Obama owns it, that will make him look bad. Since Obama is their king, and they like having him as a king, they wouldn’t want him to look bad.
Apparently you didn’t read the article or my post in full.
It’s about tougher economic sanctions, not war.
I’ll tell you what, you take a reading comprehension class and I’ll have my head examined.
Forget arming Ukraine, they may want to bomb Russia.
Arm Ukrainians. McCain has said this like he wanted to arm Syrian “rebels.” Yeah, THOSE Syrian rebels.
McCainiacs, Soronistas, Obamanistas, unending-interventionists unite!
These that are baning the drum want to ride the DR. StrangeMccain rocket.
Must intervene militarily by whatever means...
Where exactly do you suppose economic sanctions and arming the Ukrainans leads to exactly? Cleveland?
Ever crack a history book?
We need to stay out of this.
Obama has the anti-Midas touch.
LIbya (Benghazi). Egypt's new gov’t under the Muslim Bro’Hood will be good they said. They are “largely secular.” 2 years later Kerry says that their ouster is the return of Democracy to Egypt. Most in Egypt say what happened to them, and now Egypt is closer to Russia now. Before it was the U.S.
Obama wanted to arm Syrian “rebels” (the good kind, ya know) two years too late.
Now Ukraine.
Trust the anti-Midas touch? Don't think so...
It boggles my mind how many on FR think that arming Neo Nazis against Russia is a good idea.
He is now a McCainiac and does Obama’s bidding...
Can some of Corker’s constituents disabuse him of this idea?
