A bill to increase the federal minimum wage stalled Wednesday in the Senate, in the latest setback for Democrats pushing a set of election-year economic bills.
Republicans argued that the change would be too expensive for employers and would backfire by costing jobs. Fueling their argument was a Wednesday morning Commerce Department report showing the economy grew at just a 0.1 percent rate in the first quarter.

Wouldn't it be a lot easier to simply lower the arbitrary poverty line? It's all a dumb numbers game anyway.
I think that most Americans understand that if the price of something goes up, you are apt to use less of it. Since many of these Senators are insulated from everyday economics, they can make any pronouncement that they feel will appeal to their base.
Why not just declare poverty and homelessness illegal?
If it works for healthcare...
>>too expensive for employers and would backfire by costing jobs
Political cartoon showing 3 fast food workers, the last one being more middle aged than young:
1: “I got a raise!”
2: “I got a raise!”
3: “I got fired to pay for their raises.”
“Democrats argue that if fully phased in by 2016, it would push a family of three above the federal poverty line - a level such earners have not surpassed since 1979. “
Except the ones losing their jobs from it.
No doubt about it, it would cost jobs.
Maybe someone had a moment of clarity after the GDP number came out.
Democrats argue that if fully phased in by 2016, it would push a family of three above the federal poverty line - a level such earners have not surpassed since 1979.
Except the ones losing their jobs from it.”
The Rats argue that it would “push a family of three above the federal poverty line”. This is a very very flawed argument. They make that statement based on the cost of goods, food, services TODAY. Raise the minimum wage and the cost of everything starts inching up and up and up. If simply raising the minimum wage worked, HOW COME IT DIDN’T WORK THE PAST TIMES THEY RAISED THE MINIMUM WAGE? Because the cost of the wage increases get passed on to everyone. It’s the only way businesses can stay in business. They also don’t factor in the costs of FICA and Medicare taxes to both the employee and the employer. Those taxes are calculated by the wage.
I haven’t looked at the current tax tables but does the fairly large increase jump mean “a higher tax bracket” for those earning minimum wage?
An increased minimum wage would not only feed inflation, but also decrease the low-skilled workforce, decrease corporate profits and prohibit companies from paying executive management the incomes they deserve.
In other words, an increase in the minimum wage is a class warfare tactic executed by Democrats.
Democrats demand a raise in the Minimum wage and then will decry the vanishing of the summer jobs for hundreds of thousands of off-for-the-summer school kids.
No first part time jobs. No actual experience in the work force. No initial entry in a resume. No scheduled need to head to work. Nothing to do but laze around and get into trouble and worse.
Youth violence and trouble is decried by the very people who are forcing them onto the streets.
That is just for the high school age kids. Now factor in the vanishing of jobs for the newly graduated college students as well as the part time jobs for older and semi-retired people.
Never forget..the LAW may require an employer to pay a certain level of wage. The is NO law requiring anyone to be an employer.
