IMHO, what prevented a continuation of the persecution of Jews wasn’t the demise of Hitler, but the knowledge that if you try it, America will be all over you. Obama seems to be saying, have at it. We have more important things to worry about than an ethnic cleansing.

No, America did nothing about the Holocaust, name unknown then. If the term was known, one could accuse FDR and the New York Times as being the original Holocaust deniers. There has never been a message from the US, the Euros, the UN or any state with the power to act that genocide won't be tolerated. Leaving the Reich aside, collectively the Arab world conducted what was in many ways a more efficient genocide than Hitler. They purged their nations of millennia old Jewish population without a peep from anyone. In the Arab world, murdering and forcing Christians from their homes should surprise no one. Not quite there in Europe, Jews first, but if that comes to be this century, it will have been enabled by leaders with blinders on.
