Cost is only part of the reason that non-union truck lines are eating the unionized truck lines lunch. The other reason is that big shippers like our plant prefer working with non-union lines. Their drivers actually know how to pick up a pallet jack and help load the truck, are familiar with cross-docking and don't expect to be treated like royalty who are doing you a huge favor by showing up to deliver or drop a load.
Do what everyone else is doing, go to independent contractors, and no need to worry about unions, trucks, maintenance, gas, tires, all the insurance, payroll taxes workers comp and on and on... etc, etc, etc...

We have the same problems with our teamsters lazy ass drivers. They won’t even come out of the truck once they dock.
If these truckers are not employed by your company they should not be on your loading dock doing your employees work. If they were injured your insurance company would raise your rates for even allowing it and I’m sure the foreman in charge of that area would get reamed or even fired for allowing it.
