The biggest problem is that republicans won’t capitalize when its advantageous.

We want the keystone pipeline built but don’t bother to mention the fact that oil trains are rolling through heavily populated residential areas of Detroit. The democrats claim to care about the poor and minorities yet don’t care about potential disasters of their own making.

The democrats are a party with built in weakness but republicans just don’t seem to be able to figure out how to break the factions.
