On that side, theres an emblem of the Russian Federations ministry of defense. Below that, this inscription: For the return of Crimea 20.02.14 - 03.18.14.
Yet how could the dates of Crimeas liberation have begun on February 20th?

Even more perplexing is that Viktor Yanukovych was still officially the president of Ukraine and Crimea on February 20. So how could this operation have begun on that day, while he was still presidentor more importantly, why?

Why not? The Medal is dated from 20 February 2014. What makes you claim the medal was not forged before 1 March 2014, when it was awarded by 25 March 2014? It usually takes at least a few weeks or months of lead time for the manufacturer to make the artwork, die, ribbon, and accompanying material for producing these medals and their associated documents. Three or four weeks is very little time to prepare and produce such items from scratch, so it is much more likely they were produced sometime before or wqell before 20 February 2014.
