He has to make a capital investment to buy land and then pay taxes on it.

They homesteaded the land they own for free way back then. The grazing lease has been handed down thru the generations. He only pays around $13.50 per month per unit.

It must have been a an acceptable or good deal to all the generations, otherwise they would have left a long time ago.

How much has he paid since 1998? Seems his little ranch don’t support his herd
thus he runs them on the gov’t land and doesn’t pay.

Do you know any of the fact?

$13.50 per month would be pretty high rent on that land. I rented my irrigated pasture last year for $150/A. It will carry 2 units per acre for 6 months, it is certified organic, and my rent is considered top of the market. My irrigated pasture costs $25/A per month for 6 months (and the tenant has use of the land for the other 6 months for free) - so that comes to $12.50/AUM.

I think you meant $13.50 per grazing season - which is about right.
