#5 – America: “A Horse with No Name”

The musicologist Nicholas Slonimsky, whom I met in 1988 near the end of a very long life, wrote a book on harmony that took off in sales when rock musicians began using it as their musical bible. A lot of the fourths and fifths used in harmonies starting in the late Sixties came from reading Slonimsky. This is a good example of a song that defies harmonic convention, and the lyrics are a kind of stream-of-consciousness poetry. It’s one of a kind.
