California poultry has been rejected in countries around the world following a bird flu outbreak in Stanislaus county.
Quail on the farm tested positive for strain H5 of the avian flu.

I quail at the thought, so does Dan.
In Virginia, we have two dead and 4 hospitalized locally and they won’t tell us the cause. Just “Nothing to worry about”. My first thought was bird or swine flu.

Post to me or FReep mail to be on/off the Bring Out Your Dead ping list.
The purpose of the Bring Out Your Dead ping list (formerly the Ebola ping list) is very early warning of emerging pandemics, as such it has a high false positive rate.
So far the false positive rate is 100%.
At some point we may well have a high mortality pandemic, and likely as not the Bring Out Your Dead threads will miss the beginning entirely.
*sigh* Such is life, and death...
Very annoying, it does not say which N the strain contains. It would be nice to know that.
does this mean that Big Bird will be frisked, anal cavity search on every flight he goes on,from now on?
Ping! (Thanks, LucyT and nully!)
Yikes,I’ve got a L&O-SVU on and it’s about bad meat.
Odd coincidence.

Where are you in Va? We have family in Richmond, Va. DIL is a nurse practitioner. I wonder if she’s heard anything? Will have to email her.
Pulaski, Va seems to be the epicenter.
My wife (Giles County) suspects Anthrax.
The video is not working. What did it say?
Maybe this will work:

Okay, thanks. A bit far from Richmond but close enough for concern.
Anthrax? Not THAT’S scary. This is going to be something to keep an eye on.
Importantly, this is “low-pathogenic avian influenza virus”.
(CDC information)
“Avian influenza A viruses are classified into two categories (low pathogenic and highly pathogenic) that refer to their ability to cause severe disease, based upon molecular characteristics of the virus and mortality in birds under experimental conditions.
“Infection of poultry with low pathogenic avian influenza A (LPAI) viruses may cause no disease or mild illness (such as ruffled feathers and a drop in egg production) and may not be detected.
“Infection of poultry with highly pathogenic avian influenza A (HPAI) viruses can cause severe disease with high mortality. Both HPAI and LPAI viruses can spread rapidly through poultry flocks.
“HPAI virus infection can cause disease that affects multiple internal organs with mortality up to 90-100% in chickens, often within 48 hours. However, ducks can be infected without any signs of illness. There are genetic and antigenic differences between the influenza A virus subtypes that typically infect only birds and those that can infect birds and people.”
****
“Nine potential subtypes of H5 viruses are known (H5N1, H5N2, H5N3, H5N4, H5N5, H5N6, H5N7, H5N8, and H5N9). Most H5 viruses identified worldwide in wild birds and poultry are LPAI viruses.
“Sporadic H5 virus infection of humans, such as with highly pathogenic avian influenza A (H5N1) viruses currently circulating among poultry in Asia and the Middle East have been reported in 15 countries, often resulting in severe pneumonia with approximately 60% mortality worldwide.”
Thanks for the ping!
Thanks for the ping.
You’re welcome, GOPJ!

Rather than endure 3 ads and a Flash player crash, and still not get an answer, let me just ask here:
Is there any conjecture on how the CA birds contracted the virus?
If it’s from wild birds, every poultry flock in N.America may now be at risk.
