To me, a Protestant, Pope John Paul II, earned his sainthood during his life time in what he did for humanity and in freeing the Soviet Union and Communist controlled eastern Europe from atheist dominion.

I agree; he openly performed masses in front of Communist officials while in Poland and to me, that took courage beyond human ordinariness.
