An online petition calling on San Francisco to overhaul laws that allow landlords to evict tenants for hosting on Airbnb has amassed more than 26,000 signatures, fueled by social media and a hand from the giant hospitality website.
"People should be made aware that current law is allowing this to happen," said Peter K., a retired educator who started the petition a week ago. Peter asked to withhold his last name because he rents to Airbnb visitors in his San Francisco home and wants to avoid any trouble with city authorities until the law is clarified.
The petition was motivated by stories in The Chronicle about Airbnb hosts who received eviction notices from their landlords for "illegal use" - violating the city's ban on rentals of less than 30 days, he said.
Peter launched his petition on Peers.org, a nonprofit that supports the "sharing economy" - marketplaces for renting, selling or bartering people's unused assets, such as rooms, cars and skills.

What does your rental lease say?
Most likely - so subletting and no renting.
Hotel cartel $cared of Joe Six-Pack.
Taxis hate that other outfit for the same rea$on.
Ditto most mortgages. And in both lease and mortgage the insurance for the occupant clearly states no leasing.
I think Airbnb gets around that by providing umbrella coverage of some sort. But I wouldn’t want to test that with my own nest egg.
Its a cool idea but its venturing into uncharted legal territory.
Seems like a good idea. Rent out a room to total strangers.
Some have mentioned that Airbnb attracts people who like to set up mini-brothels.
More on “the sharing economy” — a movement not so much to allow people to collect more pocket money in a foundering economy, but to discourage acquisition and use of private property?
Meh —we only hear the nude fatty gang-bang stories from venues like SanFran and London, in which case folks should know better.
I’ll bet in Peoria, etc. things go fine.
Im not willing to bet my life on it. Which is why i also wouldnt want neighbors who do it.
I bet the prostitutes love this idea.
u know how this will work out?
Seller will electronically evaluate buyer, and vice-versa. Like Ebay. Networks permit this.
It has been screwed up in the beginning stage, and this will improve, going forward.
If any seller sees a low or average score on a prospective room buyer, then he’ll have a right of refusal.
The system will be two-way and will work for mutual benefit.
I’ve rented via air bnb several times.
Awesome deals. Terrific homes.
Very relaxing.
I appreciate having clean sheets, clean towels, full kitchen and washer / dryer.
Had a friend pick up my shopping list in one town I visited and my fridge was full 5 minutes after taking the home, with food and drink I like
Another time, I paid a concierge service to deliver my foods.
I bring my own shampoo/conditioner and soap.
I like air bnb.
Prefer Four Seasons but, if I’m with a group air bnb is definitely worth the money and the cost per person can be as low as $20 a night
You might be a great tenant, but as a landlord I have lots of horror stories of people in my units and what they have done.
I do a credit check, criminal background check and eviction check on tenants before I sign a rental contract with them. Do the air bnb people do this?
What happens when an air bnb renter accidentally breaks something expensive? He isn’t going to pay for it. The people who rent from me say “it isn’t our fault, he broke it.” And, I end up in small claims court, where my contract says the tenants I have are responsible for the actions of their guests, and they ultimately pay, but it is a big time waster for me, with bad feelings on all sides.
