TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) If expanding the guest list to include Michelle Obama at graduation for high school students in the Kansas capital city means fewer seats for friends and family, some students and their parents would prefer the first lady not attend.
A furor over what the Topeka school district considers an honor has erupted after plans were announced for Obama to address a combined graduation ceremony for five area high schools next month an 8,000-seat arena. For some, it was the prospect of a tight limit on the number of seats allotted to each graduate. For others, it was the notion that Obama's speech, tied to the 60th anniversary of the U.S. Supreme Court's decision in Brown v. Board of Education outlawing segregation in schools, would overshadow the student's big day.
"I'm a single mother who has raised him for 18 years by myself," said Tina Hernandez, parent of Topeka High School senior Dauby Knight. "I've told him education is the only way out. This is one of the biggest days of their lives. They've taken the glory and shine from the children and put on Mrs. Obama. She doesn't know our kids."

More local news from WBIW in Topeka, you have to read the comment section, I did pick this one up in the comment section: “Also since the First Lady will be there no personal pictures or videos will be allowed to be taken. Someone tell me WHAT PARENT DOESN’T WANT A PICTURE OF THEIR CHILD RECEIVING THEIR DIPLOMA ON STAGE!”
Most schools dont have an indoor space big enough for mooche's big @$$. Fixed your comment.
60th anniversary???? A couple who have been married for 60 years - now that is a big deal and worthy of a special celebration. But other than that, big celebrations usually follow certain milestones such as 25 years, 50 years, 100 years, 200 years. That the Obamas have chosen the 60th anniversary of this court case to interject themselves into tells us that this affair is nothing more than political staging, with Michele as the star.
If they go through with Moochelle attending the graduation, all those kids should bombard her with all the crappy food she’s forced on them in their senior year.
Sheesh....what a “b” word
Very good point!! It’s all about them and their propaganda
Future so bright, I gotta wear shades....be sure to sign up for Obamacare and register to vote as you leave.
Haze secrete service man! Dat girl, 10th row back on the left 5 seat down is eat’n sumthing not on da skool lunch menu....bringz it to me, I be hongry
Are they going to give her an honorary high school diploma?
Can’t they move it to Arrowhead Stadium? Only 70 miles away. I’m sure there will be legions wanting to see MooseChelle speak.
“All the students should show up wearing half a watermelon for a hat and a KFC T-shirt.”
Good idea. What could possibly go wrong with that?
There should be a recall ballot to remove every member of the Topeka school district who voted to invite Moochelle Antoinette Traitorobama to the high school graduation. Such school board members should be designated as “unfit citizens.”
It would be interesting to find out the racial makeup of each school. I suspect the reason why they are having all these schools together in the graduation is that the schools are divided along racial lines. It makes Michelle look stupid if she is praising the Brown vs Board of Education ruling to a school that is mainly one race. That is why they are having these schools all together, because the photo op will show the audience as mixed races, which may not be true in reality.
If so, is she for real?
What would you like to say to the woman that is representing America?
Prison.
Does that mean no smart phones? Or do we need to leave them in the car to get stolen?
Wonder what the SS will do when someone breaks out an air horn?
Wonder if she’ll be brazen enough to mention what a “rousing success” her school lunch program is. I would be booing my head off to that.
