Saudi Arabia is scheduled to begin building the worlds tallest tower next week, which will soar 1km in to the sky when completed.
The Kingdom Tower in the coastal city of Jeddah will measure 3,280 feet (1km), some 568 feet (173 meters) taller than the current Guinness world record holder, Dubais Burj Khalifa, which stands at 2,716 feet (827 metres).
At an estimated cost of $1.23bn, the tower in Saudi will require approximately 5.7 million square feet of concrete, 80,000 tonnes of steel for its 200 floors and will take five years to complete, according to The Saudi Gazette.
The tower, overlooking the Red Sea, will feature a five-star Four Seasons hotel, apartments, office space and an observatory.
But constructing the tower is not without its many challenges.

Doesn’t matter who is building it, we’re not the ones having it. The arabs and Chinese are leaving us in their dust.
LOL!
You think they’re trying to compensate for something?
How pathetic!
nearly twice as tall...
Great lets wait until they’re finished and crash an airliner into it.
Dollars go to SA in exchange for oil.
Those dollars have to come BACK somehow.
This is one of the ways.
European and American companies sell TONS of stuff to the mideast.
Trucks, powerplants, management consulting, airplanes, heavy equipment, engineering services, etc., etc.
Then dollars go from SA back to US companies as sales.
We have to sell them something in exchange for buying from them.
They knocked down our 2nd tallest buildings and we’re supposed to cheer them on when they build taller than we can now? Uh huh
by the time they finish it,most of us here on free republic will be between 100 and 125 years old.
No, but instead of sitting around and whining about it, we should go ahead and build a few of our own.
We can’t. We’re too poor and too afraid cause they’ll be targets for the Saudis to knock down anyway.
Well, then we get what we deserve then.
The problem is they have to build it on sand
Its missing the call-to-prayer loudspeakers.
Why?
Maybe to make it easier for their wahabbi folks to knock down a building with an airplane
Absolutely right. Engineering company I work for has been doing preliminary foundation testing on this site for a year. And we don’t work cheap. If the Saudis have penis envy or whatever the reason for building this monstrosity, I’m happy to help them get over it at $1,500/ day.
“No, but instead of sitting around and whining about it, we should go ahead and build a few of our own.”
For what?
They can use it to train the next group of Saudi one-way, 9/11, terrorist pilots.
