A Tribute to Steve Pratt by Bert Smith
In the 70’s, Steve Pratt and I were both ranchers trying to understand why the federal government had so much power on western lands. We got busy going to conferences, teaching, lecturing, and recruiting support for taking back the federal lands.
Steve was a good lecturer and became a very, very popular speaker. He had a sweet spirit that was contagious. You could feel the sweetness of his spirit as he talked. In many cases, you loved the feeling of being with Steve because of his wonderful spirit that he carried with him. He was a man who had the Holy Ghost as his companion and that was a great asset to his life. He put the Spirit into all of his messages. He really was a man of God.
There has never been a time in the history of our United States when a man like Stephen Pratt was more needed than now. He had a great ability to speak on any subject that was hard to understand and make it understandable to the masses. Steve was gifted at explaining how to take back the federal lands into state ownership as intended. He was actively engaged in this process when his life was brought to a sudden halt. We will miss him.
