WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Barack Obama told Russian President Vladimir Putin in a tense phone call on Monday that Moscow would face further costs for its actions in Ukraine and should use its influence to get separatists in the country to stand down.
Armed pro-Russian separatists seized more buildings in eastern Ukraine earlier in the day, expanding their control after the government failed to follow through on a threatened military crackdown.
In a call that the White House said Moscow requested, Obama told Putin that those forces were threatening to undermine and destabilize the government in Kiev.
"The president emphasized that all irregular forces in the country need to lay down their arms, and he urged President Putin to use his influence with these armed, pro-Russian groups to convince them to depart the buildings they have seized," the White House said in a statement.
Obama said Russian troops needed to withdraw from Ukraine's border to defuse tensions and made a point of praising Kiev for its "remarkable restraint" and efforts to unify the country with elections, constitutional reform and proposals to decentralize power to local governments.

I hope it wasn’t recorded for posterity. Our nation can only take so much humiliation in one decade.
If Obama and Putin were on skype phones, where you can see who you’re speaking to he may have ended up asking Jay Carny: How do you say “Don’t roll your eyes at me! In Russian?
I forgot, but I think one of you gentlemen when supporting Russian invasion of Crimea, said that invasion of East/South Ukraine by Russia would be unjustified.
(I could be mistaken, then, my apologies)
Another opportunity approaches for B. Hussein Obama to have his finest hour.
Yes indeed! For over five long years, B. Hussein has been waiting for the perfect moment to demonstrate to the Liberals who voted for him in the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize White Guilt Contest, that he really was worthy of an award that he had done nothing to earn.
The time is now, as many, in ridicule, have said that Obama looks like an Ass when he leads from behind.
Now is the time to Carpe the Diem and shower his diplomatic brilliance over the pesky Ukraine incident for all the World to see.
BTW, if B. Hussein can pull this his finest hour off, the most surprised person will be his former self and alter-ego, Barry Soetoro.
Putin must have had a bad day. He called Obama for amusement. A little comedy relief is as good as a shot of vodka.
I did say with Crimea its a special case.
As for eastern Ukraine no one has proof of Russian involvement. As long they don’t formally cross the border, they can do what they want.
The Donbass is not pro-Russian. The way they see it in Moscow, its more advantageous keeping it a thorn in the West’s side.
They can claim to be the knight in shining armor that they would be robbed of in an invasion. While Russia won’t be stopped by sanctions, it figures it has no need to intervene. Ukraine is being kept weak and that’s good enough for Russia’s interests.
Barry’s such an Urkel, if we don’t laugh we’ll cry, with his petulance and groveling and whinging. Holder too.
Someone should teach this foreigner our national anthem, epecially the last five words before Scotland takes them back for good.
Brave Sir Barack, agonizing months over nailing bin Ladin, whipped by women until he finally pulled the trigger. From a golf cart probably. What a puss.
hahahaha
LOL!:-)
It’s still better than our previous president having phone sex with Putin.
It would not surprise me at all if the White House and the MSM employees start mentioning racism.
Feel free to check my past posts.
I said when the coup went down, and Russia moved to secure Crimea, that the next logical step would be the Donetsk Basin, because they wouldn’t take kindly to the anti-Russian radicals now in charge. It’s where the resources and the Industry are that.
I also thought that Melitopol would be the key to any later moves, as it sits astride the road and rail to Crimea, but as far as I know, there hasn’t been any unrest reported there.
It was in a post to Jim Robinson, in fact.
You keep making the same mistake, confusing an honest appraisal of the facts as known, as “supporting Putin”.
I spent a good portion of my military career “analyzing” the Soviets, so all of this has a particular interest to me.
I’m glad that’s settled. I’ll bet Putin is trembling in his boots.
Everything is tense for Obama since Reggie left.
