AP NEWSBREAK: RUSSIAN JET PASSES NEAR US WARSHIP

WASHINGTON (AP) -- A Russian fighter jet made multiple, close-range passes near an American warship in the Black Sea for more than 90 minutes Saturday amid escalating tensions in the region, U.S. military officials said Monday.

In the first public account of the incident, the officials said the Russian Fencer made 12 passes, and flew within 1,000 yards of the USS Donald Cook, a Navy destroyer, at about 500 feet above sea level.

The U.S. warship issued several radio queries and warnings using international emergency circuits, but the Russian aircraft did not respond.

"This provocative and unprofessional Russian action is inconsistent with international protocols and previous agreements on the professional interaction between our militaries," said Army Col. Steve Warren, a Pentagon spokesman.

I don’t have a dream world. I didn’t say I thought they would put a carrier in the Black Sea. There is no room to manuever in the Black Sea for a carrier.

Carriers usually maintain a 200 mile perimeter so the Russian jet would never have gotten anywhere near it. He would have been intercepted by Hornets about 200 miles out.

Plus they have whats called picket ships all around a carrier who also could have taken care of it.

I heard we immediately ordered our Destroyer to respond by unfurling a Rainbow flag, along with deployment of a Transvestite Dance Review topside.......

So I imagine that Hussein has ordered all of the defensive Phalanx guns shut off.
I mean isn’t this the reason that they exist in the first place?
I understand the difference but haven’t these people learned anything from the Cole?

Gotta be frustrating making that many passes and still not be able to find the "red line."

The carrier’s jets would have intercepted the Russian plane, but the current rules of engagement obviously do not include shooting them down unless they commit an obvious hostile act.

The Black Sea IS Russia’s coastline. You haven’t been paying attention.

It was in my day. No reason to think it’s any different now. We referred to a certain “pucker factor”.

Su-24 doesn’t have and internal weapons bay. The Su-24 Fencer was probably the dedicated reconnaissance variant. Su-24 Fencer E.
