If a nuclear bomb exploded in downtown Washington, what should you do?
The Week ^ | April 14, 2014

Funny question in the headline, yes?

But since President Obama worries more about the threat of terrorists' improvised nuclear device going off in a major American city than anything Russia can throw at us, I was wondering if the government had deigned to share with us citizens any tips for, you know, surviving something their own intelligence points to as the likeliest unlikely Black Swan event.

Well, no. And yes.

No — very few people in Washington, D.C., who work for the government have any idea what they would do if a 10-kiloton nuclear device exploded at the intersection of 16th and K streets.

You can always look to movies to figure this stuff out, right? And in movies, since nuclear radiation is BAD, the thing to do is to get away from it as quickly as possible. In the movies, electronics are fried, too, the response is chaotic, and hundreds of thousands of people die.

Interestingly enough, though, the government has done quite a bit of work to figure out what exactly would happen if a suitcase nuke — which, I know, doesn't really exist, but, for the sake of this example, bear with me — actually did explode a few blocks from the White House.

I would hope that Congress, the Supreme Court, the president and vice president were all in town.

Hey hey hey. There are definitely some I hope would be out of town. Antonin Scalia. Ted Cruz. Trey Gowdy. Clarence Thomas. Louis Gohmert. Charles Pope. Me. My friends.

I’d put a stop payment on my tax check.

Now there's a plan I can agree to .

Too bad you can’t talk her into moving them in you. I already made it clear to my family that I’ll be glad to help in their golden years... but you’re going to be coming to me.

I don’t know.

If this happened, and I hope it does not. It might end up being Fallout 4, live.

I’m just finished with feeling bad/sorry for people that revel in hating me and everything I believe in. so screw them. It now works both ways. they enjoyed mocking me and those like me for standing for principle and what America represented until about the 60s, then I will laugh in their faces when the shoe is on the other foot.

All kidding aside, I fully believe we are headed to a Road Warrior scenario. And in that scenario I’m toast. But plenty of people will survive it. Plenty of us and plenty of them.

The difference is that while we are sorting out who we can trust and working to rebuild, ‘they’ will be either enslaving the weakest amongst them for labor/sex, killing each other for the scraps (since they lack skills most of us possess like farming/camping/mechanical/construction ect) or both.

There are a few of us that joke around about the Fallout video game but it’s not all a joke/fantasy. We have the very recent examples of Bosnia, Libya and Egypt to guide us as to what happens, and how fast, when society breaks down.

And every time you look back over history, the strong prey on the weak unless some form of morality guides them. My particular form says actions have consequences and stupid is it’s own reward. They made their bed so they can sleep in it.

Because I know if I survive I will sleep well knowing they get to experience the full measure of their worldview.

Unfortunately, my kid lives in the D.C. area.

As do my younger son and his brand new bride. A mile or less from the designated Ground Zero.

I view the Fallout series as a kind of virtual training tool from the aspect of what to expect in terms of behavioral and cultural norms that will be confronted in such a post apocalyptic scenario. It puts you in the mindset of what it will take to survive in that setting.

Yup. Because Bethesda spent a LOT of money on professionals to ‘wargame’ that thing out. People don’t want to believe something like that could be real despite example after example throughout history of that very thing happening over and over and over and over and over.

But it idi happen. And it will again.

What are a bunch of citified people that are more worried about their triple mocha short latte’ than stocking an extra few cans of soup going to do when Starbucks is closed and the fridge is empty...forever?

What are the millions of people who can’t change a car tire going to do to build shelter?

They are going to become Raiderbait. Real raiders. Raders that used to be called gang bangers and felons. And they will be led by onetime Democrats that value power over all else.

Welcome to Paradise Falls.

10 KT isn’t actually very big by nuclear standards. I don’t think there are any golf courses within the blast area, so don’t getcher hopes up...

But don’t forget the gamma burst and fallout. He can’t outrun that quick enough to avoid the radiation exposure especially from the 14th or whichever hole..

Do something to help if possible. Otherwise, do your daily chores. Too much television is bad for you.
