They were both Christian, and the family thanked members of their church congregation, among other people, for their support.

People are, in these circumstances, interested in motive.
Apparently when he arrived at the Jewish Community Center it was being used for auditions for something called the "KC SuperStar" contest as well as rehersals for a production of "To Kill A Mockingbird". So if it was the shooters intent to kill only Jewish people he chose a time when most of the people there were not Jewish.
Knowing the motive is not the crime of hate. An individual's hate is their business. Violence that precipitates from said hate, is the purview of government prosecutors. You can use the motive to help prosecute the crime, but to make HATE itself the crime is the fascist trappings of the thought police and has no place in a free republic.
I agree with you re: hate crimes as a higher level of crime are bogus.
But people want to know the motive and when an abstract hate is the motive I expect that news organizations ought to report it.
My son graduated HS 4 years ago. We let him drive an old car to school. In the parking lot some brain dead doper kid had scratched various stupidity into the paint on some cars. My kid showed me a little swastika that he found scratched into the paint near the windshield it was about half the diameter of a penny. I called the school to complain about the damage. The lib moron asst principal wanted to make a hate crime case out of it because of the shape of the damage. . I had to stop him right there and tell him that the damage is what I was concerned about and not any hate crime from some dopey kid who had nothing else to do with his time. I suppose that if I was jewish I might feel different but this struck me as something I might have drawn on my own ring binder as a kid. Probably on a poor drawing of a Messerschmidt and being shot down by another plane that had US insignias on it. (Today I would probably be expelled for the war/shooting scene....no tolerance for that you know ).
The point is, hate me all you want. If you damage my property of hurt me physically I’m going to want compensation (a good butt whooping comes to mind before monetary compensation, but hey, that’s just me )
I hear ya, but I didn’t see the Fox News segment—so I don’t know what set you off about their covering the hate crime angle.
