Many Americans have been watching with great consternation the ongoing struggle between the Federal Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and the U.S. Marshals against Cliven Bundy and his family. There are no signs of either side relinquishing their position. Many onlookers have been informed that this dispute is over protecting the desert tortoise. But it is nothing of the sort. In fact, the reality of the dispute goes far underneath what is being talked about. The more appropriate source of the dispute is ground water as well as surface water -- this is a war over water.

this imperial fedgov has no desire to ever tell the truth to citizens. they are incapable of doing so.
Maybe the best Dingy Puppet EVER in the Fed bureaucracy.
Thanks for posting this explanation. It makes perfect sense. In WA State the leftist regulators would like to pt meters on all rural wells that do not have specifically deeded water rights because the Indians have the right to as much water as they need and they say that they need it all. In some areas of WA they have made it illegal to place rain barrel or cistern on your own property without obtaining a permit from the dept of wildlife, saying if the rain was permitted to run freely, it might run off of your property and then it wouldn’t be yours any more.
He who controls the water, controls the people. The endangered tortoise may be just a tool of the left, but hat is all the endangered species act is ever. This time, it is also a political organizing tool aimed at reuniting the Democrat base and distracting them from Obamacare.
Curiouser and curiouser:
Furthermore, it might be coincidental that the problems with the Bundy cattle ranching began in 1993, the same year Patricia Mulroy began serving as general manager of the Southern Nevada Water Authority. From 1989, Ms. Mulroy was also the general manager of the Las Vegas Valley Water District. The author attempted to contact Ms. Mulroy for a comment but she retired from both positions a few months ago in February.
Its also possible the drought in the western states could have been the catalyst to the desperate actions by the Federal authorities surrounding the Bundy cattle operation. Currently, water rights in Nevada run anywhere from $7,000 to $50,000 per acre foot (depending on the time of year and the amount of rainfall or snowfall in the western region). The water in Nevada is then auctioned, as it has been for at least twenty-five years. That same water can be resold in Las Vegas, Arizona, or Southern California.
Bunkerville in Nevada is ensconced between the Virgin River and the main road, Riverside Road. The Virgin River is a tributary to Lake Mead. The river, along with other sources, discharges into Lake Mead, the largest reservoir in the United States. Both the Virgin River and Lake Mead are part of the Colorado River Basin. In fact, Lake Mead is considered to be the largest surface water collection for the Colorado River. Whoever controls the water controls the vast wealth that is distributed to a network of states at a crucial time during a water shortage.
Add to that, so much of what ends up in Lake Mead ends up evaporating (the main problem with these manmade desert “lakes”).
“The real wealth is in the water to support the plush green golf courses, and surrounding housing developments, gleaming swimming pools, and other demands by hotels and households in Las Vegas, Arizona, and Southern California.”
Crony capitalism strikes again. The corporate prostitutes who bankroll the Dems and RINOs are calling in their chips.
Too bad this isn’t 1800, before massive Federal Power and law Enforcement elites. The locals would have settled this in their own proper way.
I feel like this Rancher is part of a dying America. An America of rugged individualism, hard work ethic, and self dependence. It is sad that there is fewer and fewer such men, and that society is trying to exterminate such people by force of government.
Add to that the desert (straw man) tortoise fares better on grazed land.
I once talked with a hydrologist looking in central Tanzania for enough water for the new capitol, Dodoma. He said the problem was that rainfall averaged less than one meter per year while evaporation was 2 meters per year.
OK, I looked it up. Here are the numbers for Lake Mead:
"The average monthly rates for the Lake Mead open-water evaporation stations were computed for 1998 and 1999. For open-water stations, the sum of the average monthly rates for 1998 was 88.9 in. (7.4 ft) and the sum for 1999 was 90.7 in. (7.6 ft; table 7). For these 2 years, the average annual Lake Mead evaporation rate was 89.8 in. (7.5 ft). "
Sadly, this entire story reminds me of an old western cowboy movie with land grabbing, water rights and all. It may not be long before the gun fights begin.
Having lived in the west, I understand the importance of water rights and Mr. Bundy is clearly a victim of some of that.
Per Bundy’s son David, who was interviewed by Fox, what upsets me is that the BLM deliberately destroyed some of the water holes and pipeline systems that fed water to a variety of domestic cattle and wildlife in that area as well. Are you surprised? NOT ME.
This is not the first time the feds have acted this way.
Wow, I never would have made the connection to Al Bundy without your knee-slapper of a post.
Waco II
Did you ever see the movie Milagro Beanfield War? Has many elements similar to what’s happening now.
I was thinking this whole story reminded me of the movie Chinatown. Jim Robinson even posted about a character named Mrs Mulroy. I believe that was the name of Faye Dunaways character in the movie. If you recall it was about a murder and who controlled water rights in Los Angeles.
Well whats it really about?
Water, Oil, a solar energy farm?
I think it’s all a bout creating civil unrest so that
the fascists can declare martial law and suspend elections.
There is a coup d’etat going on right now you know.
Everyone is looking out for the reason when they should be
looking in. Some how, some way, Obama and his fascists
handlers are behind this.
