New York Student Suspended for “Insubordination,” aka Opposing Common Core

We’re told that there’s nothing to worry about when it comes to Common Core. If that’s true, what’s with the intimidation and the punishment for those who oppose it:

A 13-year-old student at Orange-Ulster BOCES believes she was suspended from school this week as a result of telling other students they didn’t have to take the Common Core English test Tuesday.

The girl, eighth-grader Seirra Olivero, was suspended for two days for insubordination.

While she acknowledges the charge, she contends in a complaint filed with the district that she felt bullied by three administrators because she told other students they didn’t have to take the test.

Her mother, Carin Beauchesne of Sparrowbush, said Thursday that she felt her daughter had done what students are told to do when they’re being bullied.

“She walked away! She felt she was being treated like a criminal. She’s a 13-year-old girl. What would you do?”

William Hecht, Orange-Ulster BOCES’s superintendent, said the girl’s complaint, which was filed under the state’s Dignity for All Students Act, was being taken seriously.

He said it was against school policy to discipline students for opting out of the controversial test, and that Seirra’s suspension came as the result of her refusing to obey the administrators.

He declined any further comment on the matter.

In her complaint, Seirra says that on Tuesday morning, the day of the test, she told a student he didn’t have to take the test if he didn’t want to. A teacher told her to “shut my mouth and keep walking.”

Is it just me or is that something you’d expect to hear from a prison guard?

But then, they don’t call it the school to prison pipeline for nothing.

You’ve been a sleeper troll for 14 years...haven’t you? You been here 14 years and you don’t know what common core is all about?

The wording of your question...”Is that really what conservatives want?” lacks a pleural possessive...ie: “is that really what “WE” conservatives want’? It tells me you don’t really see yourself as conservative.

You’re not really of us are you...GOPe perhaps?

We need kids who can consciously surface above the brainwashing the left throws at them...their generation will be bearing the brunt of America’s restoration or its disintegration. This girl can be homeschooled and will flourish!

ANOTHER REASON TO HOMESCHOOL

This ping list is for the “other” articles of interest to homeschoolers about education and public school. This can occasionally be a fairly high volume list. Articles pinged to the Another Reason to Homeschool List will be given the keyword of ARTH. (If I remember. If I forget, please feel free to add it yourself)

The main Homeschool Ping List handles the homeschool-specific articles. I hold both the Homeschool Ping List and the Another Reason to Homeschool Ping list. Please freepmail me to let me know if you would like to be added to or removed from either list, or both.

Also a NY ping.

Whether or not Common Core is a good or bad thing, I’m not comfortable with the idea that students can simply blow off school tests when they object to them. Is that really what conservatives want?

YES!!!!

What the heck if the point of the tests anyway? There's plenty of other ways to grade teachers students anyway.

I guess I’m not, and I guess students’ running amok in school, only obeying the rules they personally like is the what conservatives really want these days.

That sure could be a problem. Then they won't know how to be good little drones.

We can't have any of that thinking for yourself stuff going on. It's not good for the collective.
