Large parts of Washington’s known spy ring are still effectively classified, because parts of it are suggested to have been deep within the English aristocracy, even in the royal family. Still embarrassing, even today.

Washington was also known to have made extensive use of female spies, and only one of his spies was ever captured, Nathan Hale, who in retrospect appears to be far below the caliber of spies that Washington recruited.

This shows Washington’s amazing talent. While he confessed to not being particularly brilliant, he had an impressive ability to select the best and the brightest as his operatives. In his case, this almost created a ‘Washington axiom’ of leadership: that surrounding yourself with talent is far better than being talented yourself.

British arrogance cost them a continent. Ben Franklin warned them a decade earlier when questioned by the house of commons that they wouldn't find a revolution but they might make one.

Examination of Benjamin Franklin before the House of Commons February 13, 1766

Q. Can any thing less than a military force carry the Stamp Act into execution?

A. I do not see how a military force can be applied to that purpose.

Q. Why may it not?

A. Suppose a military force sent into America, they will find nobody in arms; what are they then to do? They cannot force a man to take stamps who chuses to do without them. They will not find a rebellion; they may indeed make one.
