Pro-Russia activists in the eastern Ukrainian city of Donetsk have proclaimed independence from Ukraine and asked Russia to send in troops to protect them from the government in Kiev.
Protesters who had occupied the regional government headquarters in Donetsk on Sunday set up a Peoples Council of Donetsk and voted unanimously on Monday to break away from Ukraine and form "the sovereign state of the Peoples Republic of Donetsk."
The self-proclaimed Council decided to call a referendum on splitting from Ukraine and joining Russia before May 11, that is ahead of Ukrainian presidential elections set for May 25.
"The Donetsk Republic is to be created within the administrative borders of the Donetsk region. This decision will come into effect after the referendum," the activists said in a statement.
In a separate address to Russian President Vladimir Putin, the Donetsk Council asked him to deploy a temporary peacekeeping force to the region.
"Without your support and the support of Russia, it will be hard for us to stand against the junta in Kiev," said the address.

Its Germany of the 1930’s all over again.
here we go again
So what if mexico did this with San Diego or even L.A.?
No different really.
Now what’s Obama going to do... pull Pizza Hut out of Ukraine?
Big difference: we can kick Mexico's butt (well, normally...if Obozo wasn't the CIC).
Now the rubber has hit the road.....Crimea was one thing, but Donetsk is another, not nearly the Russian majority there as in Crimea...what will Kiev do in response?
Actually there was a DonetskKrivoy Rog Soviet Republic just after the end of the First World War. It was short-lived.
Pro-Russian protesters seek to revive it in lieu of being incorporated into Russia.
Donetsk separatism has a history going back nearly a century.
Now we are getting into the range of < 40% ethnic Russians.
“not nearly the Russian majority there as in Crimea”
Ethnic Russians are a small minoity in the Donetsk Oblast. More ethnic Russians voted to go with the Ukraine than voted to go with Russia in the last voting referendum in 1991. This is a clearcut case of Putin’s Russian regime recruiting a millitant minority of fifth columnists or agents to foment violence and to overthrow the government majority of the population in Donetsk.
Donetsk Oblast
Ethnic Russian 38.2%;
Voted against Ukraine independence from Russia 12%
If Kiev doesn’t counter this, the situation will deteriorate rapidly.
If Kiev doesnt counter this, the situation will deteriorate rapidly.
It already is, and will get worst [depending on your pov].

Besides the fact that the Ukranian government is filled with members of the “Socialist-Nationalist” party which glorifies the genocidal, Nazi-aligned Banderites of the 1940s, how so?
By 1933, Hitler had burned the Reichstag, opened up the Orangeburg and Dachau death camps, declared Germany must be rid of the Jews, passed the Enabling Acts setting up a dictatorship, etc.
It amazes me the absolute stupidity of comparing every territorial battle with Hitler. Maybe there might be similarities with the Sudetenland if the Sudentenland had been German, the Czech government had been overthrown by thugs, the sudetenland to secede from the Czech government over the ouster, and implored Germany for reunification, but since that didn’t happen, I can only presume you don’t know what the hell you are talking about.
What next?
“We declare the sovereignty and independence of the corner of Nikolaivich Avenue and East Third Street!”
Putin has setup this situation to make it so any reaction by the Ukraine is an excuse for a Russian invasion and any lack of raction will also be a Russian excuse for an invasion. It is time for a response from the Ukrainian goverment and from the members of NATO. The EU now faces its critical juncture in the road, appeasement or a commitment to a forward defense of the rest of Europe.
They are discussing some sort of anti-terrorist action against separatists, but the Interior Minister already declared they won’t shoot. What a pathetic idiot, this is exactly the attitude that lost them Crimea.
Doing well, go lick some boots now.
All of this strengthens the case for a federal solution.
Its better Ukrainians reach an accord on one and soon. Or the May elections will rendered meaningless.
Of course, this depends on whether the authorities in Kiev are willing to respond to protesters’ demands or let events take their course. Blaming Russia will be of no help.
Russians and Ukranians are both Eastern Slavs. By “ethnic Russians,” what is meant is “people moved (or whose ancestors moved) to the Ukraine since 1920.” 75% of Donestk residents speak Russian, and not Ukrainian.
In 1991, Russia was still a dictatorship, and the Ukraine represented freedom. If you asked Muscovites would they rather Moscow be separated from the Soviet Union, I’m sure you’d get near 90%. But since then, the Soviet Union has fallen, and the Ukrainian government has been replaced by an anti-Democratic mob. (Yanukovich could have been replaced by May during the regularly scheduled election.)
The complete intellectual bankruptcy of your position is made obvious by your comment. Thank you.
