The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is "pushing very hard" to release a proposed rule that would establish its authority over e-cigarettes, the head of the agency said on Thursday amid concerns the products pose a risk to children.

FDA Commissioner Margaret Hamburg told senators at a Congressional budget hearing that it has taken too long to move the rule forward and that she expects the proposal to be ready for release "very soon."

There’s something really wrong with FR lately. We have more and more nannies here or conservatives being converted to the nanny cause. It truly creeps me out. I go to parties with e-cig smokers. No big deal. Of course, I tolerate smoking in my own home while having parties. They’re my guests and I allow them to use my home as theirs. And, to complete the picture, our own conservative friends are know using that suspicious phrase “it’s for the children.”

I still haven’t gotten over the candy cigarette ban.

Just ask around.
Having been born free and defiant, I still get my supply via the black market...

If they banned all guns in the US and companies replaced guns with water guns they would be passing legislation to ban water guns

Hmmmmm.
Have you tried to buy a water gun lately??

And I wouldn't be surprised to see them require some testing and approval of the ingredients. Do you know what chemicals they are putting in your e-vapors? Do you even care?

Yes and yes.
The only "controversial" ingredient involved has been approved for use in foods for many many decades.

Just FYI. . .Regulating because of their ability to infuse THC into the vapor. Loading THC into an e-cig is the aim of the ban effort, not aimed at banning play cigarettes.

"There is no stink at all"

There's still some. Not nearly as bad.

Thanks, but I'm not stupid. I know how to keep my kids out of the poison.

Well apparently many parents don't.

It’s a drug delivery device. As a society we agree to regulate these things. And it will be.

Not necessarily.
Obviously, you are unaware that nicotine free e-cigarettes are increasingly popular.

But that won't slow down the busybodies* compulsion to manipulate and control.

* "Of all tyrannies, a tyranny exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It may be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end, for they do so with the approval of their consciences.” -- C. S. Lewis

"The only "controversial" ingredient involved has been approved for use in foods for many many decades."

Actually the German study cited by the FDA, showed that there are many chemicals, different from cigarettes, that are atomized by the e-cigs, whose effect of breathing in atomized form is unknown.

Let’s face it, now that socialized medicine in this country is inevitable, like it or not, now we all are going to pay for others’ stupidity.

I’m not a smoker, but big government is a much bigger threat than some guy selling e-cigarettes.

No.
Do you even care?
No.
.

But isn't it comforting to know that somebody out there cares enough for your well-being to torment you about it?

So are coffee, tea, and caffinated sodas. Gimme a break. Should kids use E-Cigs? No. Everywhere I’ve shopped for them and juice will not sell to those under 21. Self regulated. They have helped me get off “stinkies,” and I’m not alone. You want to classify them as drug delivery devices regulated by the FDA? Anything that alters your body chemistry can then be classified as a drug. Let’s regulate your morning coffee...

I'm not in favor of big government. But I'm not in favor of no government either. That gets you Somalia.

I think the FDA and the EPA are subject to corruption and need more checks and balances. But I also think they do a lot of good.

Shows you that it’s not about second hand smoke it’s about CONTROL!

I documented that beyond doubt decades ago, when I was younger and less sensitive to victims of the ADA.
I had a fake cigarette (still have it) that I would use when visiting restaurants, department stores and supermarkets.

The coughing, wheezing, grimacing and rude comments gave me perverse pleasure.
The mentally handicapped among us are much greater in number than we realize.

I just await legislation to make displaying a fake cigarette to become a felony; as has happened with guns.

That applies to every drug except the morning after pill. The e-cig makers should sell it as an abortion drug. Watch the FDA race to make them available to kids.

Since when has the tobacco industry won any battle?

Since when have the lost any?

The tobacco companies sell as many cigarettes as they ever did, although the percentage of the population who smoke has decreased.
The tobacco companies have never lost a cent. They were all happy to collect the increased "penalty" taxes for the government.

Smokers paid every cent of the multi-hundred billion$ "penalty."

Unexpectedly (but perhaps predictably,) these huge piles of money, ostensibly to be used to defray the health cost to society due to smoking, illegally have been mostly diverted to other urgent needs, including gay programs.

I quit smoking years ago, on the basis of "Strange game... the only way to win --- is not to play."

Congress has already ruled. e-vapors are taken into the body, so whether you call it a drug or a food, or a tobacco product, the FDA has congressionally authorized jurisdiction.

Legislative bodies have been historically ignorant, arbitrary and stupid.
At one time, a Northwest state (can't recall which one) came within one vote of legislating an "easier" value of Pi

Personally, I don't give a rat's elbow what Congress has "determined" in many laws.

CO2 is a toxic gas??!!!???
