Coulter: Mitt Romney in 2016; "Cruz A Disaster On Illegal Immigration"
Real Clear Politics ^ | 4/3/2014 | Staff

HOWIE CARR, HOST: Who are you for, for president right now, Ann?

ANN COULTER: Well, don't tell him but I'm planning on giving Mitt Romney a little more time to rest -- flying out, kidnapping him and depriving him of sleep, food and water until he agrees to run again.

CARR: You're kidding?

COULTER: No.

CARR: You really want him to run again?

COULTER: Yeah, I think he was a fantastic candidate. As I've told you before, he would have won by a larger landslide than Ronald Reagan did in 1980 without Teddy Kennedy's immigration bill. And it's basically impossible to beat an incumbent, but he is head and shoulders better than the other candidates we had. And I don't want to name them, but I mean you go through the list -- and for one thing, as you and I discussed, and this is the most important point, that all of your listeners have to tell all of their friends knock it off with the Congressmen or inspirational figures. It's got to be a Governor or a Senator, preferably a Governor. And, you know, there is a limited world -- a list of who those people are, and they all have problems. None of them are articulate and reasonable, and as good on immigration as Mitt Romney! CARR: What about Ted Cruz?

COULTER: Well, he's a lot worse on immigration.

CARR: Is he that bad? I didn't think he was that bad on immigration.

COULTER: Well, most Republicans are, that's why you need to call your Congressman. I'm not singling out Ted Cruz, he has the same position a lot of these idiots have. 'Oh yes, let them come here and we have a special permit, we just won't give them citizenship. But we want to increase ...

Sorry. I used the View Replies function to see the responses to Tennessee Nana’s post, which I thought inaccurately presented the ‘illegal landscapers’ situation vis-a-vis Romney. I replied to that before reading the zillion other responses that didn’t link to the original post.

Thanks for the update. I'm inclined to agree with you that this was overhyped as an example of Romney's support for illegal immigration.

You suggested you didn’t know what was going on with Ann. As I’ve stated above, I think she’s as wrong as ever about Romney, but she is also unfortunately right about Cruz.

So I presumed you thought she was somehow off about Cruz, and I offered the perspective that many Texans, including many of their pols, don’t seem to be able to see the illegal immigration issue clearly anymore.

Oh, and I assumed you were a Texan from your FReeper name.

Did I presume anything incorrectly?

It appears the anti-Cruz faction is out in full force, on this thread. I agree with you about these folks quoting the NYSLIMES to back up their *arguments* on Sen Cruz’ immigration stance.

Here’s more detail of what Sen Cruz has to say about immigration...

This is from a recent interview that Kathleen McKinley (aka Texas Sparkle) did recently with Sen Cruz, in Austin TX after his speech at the TX Public Policy Foundation:

Now, a recent poll said that 55% of American Hispanics say they think it’s more important to find a way for illegal immigrants to live and work in the U.S. legally, than to focus on a path to citizenship. Even Hispanics want this. But Sen. Cruz, you say that Democrats would rather push for a path to citizenship (Amnesty), so they can have a divisive issue for the 2014/2016 elections. You have said the Democrats have no interest in giving us bi partisan immigration reform. Do you still believe that?

A) “Yes. Congress made a deal with the American people in 1987. They said we will grant Amnesty to the 2 to 3 million people here illegally, and we will secure the border and then fix the illegal immigration problem. That never happened, and it never worked, because we never secured our border, and we never fixed the problem The Gang of Eight Bill essentially has made the same promise. It says we will grant Amnesty and sometime, somewhere down the line, we will secure the border. Now we have 11 to 12 million here illegally. The Gang of eight bill gives the same promise we where given in 1987. And we all see how that worked out.

“In the Senate I tried very hard to propose common sense amendments that would actually fix the problem. I proposed amendments that would improve the Gang of Eight Bill. The current bill makes the illegal immigration problem only worse. In the Senate Judiciary Committee I introduced a series of amendments. One was to put real teeth in border enforcement; to actually secure the border. I proposed to triple the border enforcement, and to increase four fold the helicopters and fixed wing assets and technology. In addition, to put in place a strong e-verify in the workplace. Every single Democrats voted these amendments down.

I introduced two amendments to dramatically increase and improve and streamline legal immigration focused on high skilled workers. High Tech and high skilled foreign students study here and graduate here in engineering, science, math, and then we send them back to their own country to work. They start businesses there, when they could start business here, and create jobs. It makes no sense. The amendment I introduced would increase the numbers of temporary high skilled visas five fold. Again, every single Democrat voted it down. Why? Sen. Chuck Schumer explained why. He said the Democrats had cut a deal with the union bosses and they could not go any higher.

Another amendment I introduced was to streamline and simplify the legal immigration system. It is now an extremely complicated bureaucracy. It takes years, and it’s expensive and burdensome. I proposed to end the per country caps. Actually, Mexico is hurt the most by this. It can take as long as 10-20 yrs to come into the U.S. legally from Mexico. Increasing per country caps would help with that. Every Democrat voted against it. Again, they cut a deal with the unions.

No member of the Senate is more of an advocate of legal immigration than I am. I am the son of a legal immigrant. I believe America is an extraordinary nation because we are the children of those who risked so much. The most divisive amendment I opposed in the Gang of Eight Bill was the path to citizenship to those here illegally. I oppose it because I think that it makes it profoundly unfair to the millions of legal immigrants who have waited years, and even decades to come here legally. It would only encourage future illegal immigration. No one who is concerned about a humane system would want to encourage those to risk their lives to come here illegally.

Even if you don’t agree with me on the merits, I believe there are not the votes in the House for this bill to pass. I believe it is designed to fail by Democrats so they can campaign in 2014 and 2016 on this divisive issue. If they wanted to see real immigration that fixes the problems, they would remove the poison pill of amnesty, so we can have a bill that can pass.”

When Sen. Cruz said this to Sen. Schumer, Schumer responded, “let me be clear, if there is no path to citizenship, there can be no reform.”

Sen. Cruz thanked Sen. Schumer for his candor. It’s clear that if Schumer cannot get 100% of his bill, he will do nothing for immigration reform. Most revealing, he will do nothing for the 11 million to 12 million people here living in the shadows. So, it’s not about true immigration reform to the Democrats, it’s about running on an issue they themselves refuse to compromise on, where they have made promises to union bosses, and won’t consider changing this to pass an immigration reform bill that is best for the country.

Keep in mind, if Sen. Cruz’s amendment had passed, the underlying work permit of the Gang Of Eight would have remained. The 11 to 12 million here living in the shadows would have been able to get a work permit, which the majority of Hispanics support over Amnesty.

http://blog.chron.com/texassparkle/2014/01/sen-ted-cruz-on-immigration-reform-fighting-the-establishment-and-the-human-costs-of-illegal-immigration/

*********

I cannot stand the term “living in the shadows”, when referencing illegals. I think at one time they did live in the shadows when they actually feared being deported. They not only don’t fear being deported, but they are now living large on tax free wages (mostly) AND on welfare/assistance.

If temporary work permits (what Sen Cruz wants) are issued while welfare/assistance is cut off, I think the illegal problem would begin to fix itself.

The Dims don’t want that (temp work permits) to happen, though, because they want the illegals to become union dues paying/Dim voting citizens, once amnesty would be passed, and the GOPe is happily going along with them. Sen Cruz points this out, perfectly, in this linked interview.

That’s incorrect.

Illegal aliens are permitted by federal law to own and rent property.

Thank you, BobL, for fighting the good fight against those (paid operatives or just political supporters?) who work overtime here to try to obscure the reality of the vast majority of Republicans in Washington who are pro-amnesty, though they try to make it sound otherwise.

Yes, unintentionally it seems. I made no comments or assertions about the nature of Cruz's immigration policy stance.

Chain immigration is still the law. You brought your spouse but after you obtained permanent residency you were and are eligible to bring siblings, parents and grandparents. And then when they arrive and are granted permanent residency, they too can bring siblings, parents and grandparents, This is know as chain immigration and it is insane because it does not help the USA bring the immigrants it needs.

It is frustrating to see you argue about immigration reform when you yourself do not know the law that exists.

It seems she was primarily commenting on Cruz or Romney, so I took a guess. It does seem as if with W, Perry, and Cruz—Texas pols of varying degrees of conservatism—there is a blind spot on illegal immigration, which I attributed to Texas having so many illegals.

> “First, he supports legalizing and keeping 12,000,000 people here.”

I respect you’re being man enough to apologize but you’re still off. Cruz supporting the legalization of illegals is fiction created by the NY Times and it is surprising to see some posters here getting snookered by it. But long time Freepers have seen the lies, twists and spin of the NY Times thousands of times since FR was born.

As I posted previously in this thread, here is the real Ted Cruz on the subject of illegals:

“Ted Cruz Vows To Oppose Any Path To Legalization for Undocumented Immigrants”

http://latino.foxnews.com/latino/politics/2013/04/02/ted-cruz-vows-to-oppose-any-path-to-legalization-for-undocumented-immigrants/

“Sen. Ted Cruz is dead set against any path to legalization for undocumented immigrants, unless it sends them on a detour back to their native countries, he told talk show host Sean Hannity in an interview on Monday.”

Do you have a source for that claim that Cruz wants to allow 30,000,000 to enter the US? You are claiming that Cruz wants to give the right of chain migration to illegals?

You are claiming that Cruz wants to grant them citizenship and voting rights?

By the way, Texas and California are different in spite of facing the same immigration issues for decades, California turned left because of the lack of conservatism of it’s GOP, and the weak Christian values of it’s largely libertarian republicans.

"To all the comments here that seem intent on just bashing Coulter, not any valid comments about Romney. He's still the best one out there for the job"

Really? What makes you think so? His history of being pro-abortion? His stated belief that queers should be able to adopt children? His flip-flops on issues too numerous for me to type right now in an effort to disguise his liberalism?

It's absolutely stunning to me that adults who supposedly function normally in everyday life could think that the LOSER from the last election is the best choice we have THIS time around.

You’re really missing the bigger picture. I am surprised you didn’t apologize for using the NY Times as your guide but then you have to wrongly infer that Senator Cruz supports legalization of illegals only because he was not successful in removing that part of the Gang of 8 bill.

Senator Cruz was successful in removing amnesty from the Senate Bill but he wasn’t able to remove the legalization provision from the bill. So what did he do? Do you remember? Do you remember what he did? Because this is the part you are either forgetting or you are deliberately omitting. What he did was to work with the House to prepare them, make them aware of what the Senate was going to do. Senator Cruz was the reason that the House shut down immigration. And Senator Cruz was criticized for working directly with the House as it was claimed this was not his place to do so.

That makes Ted Cruz a conservative hero, and he is.

Here’s the real Cruz on the issue of legalization:

“Ted Cruz Vows To Oppose Any Path To Legalization for Undocumented Immigrants”

It’s not hard to put the Cruz detractors back in their holes. In fact Ted Cruz makes it easy. He’s clearly smarter than all of them combined.

But at least one detractor has apologized and is I think catching on to the smears and lies about Ted Cruz. Some of them are too feeble to ever be aware of the tools they are. But I will take the one or two who begin to see the light. That’s the whole purpose.

That’s not to say that Ted Cruz couldn’t surprise us and go to the dark side like Rubio, but I don’t expect that to happen. But if it did then Ted would have the likes of me chomping on his ass daily.

But again I don’t expect Ted Cruz to do anything except educate people on the real issues, the real debates. That’s what he is a champion of.
