If Mad Men were set in Boston in 2014, Peggy Olson, not Don Draper, would be the boss.
With the promotion of Kristen Cavallo to president of Mullen Boston last month, women now run the four biggest advertising firms in town. It caps a whirlwind 12 months of female dominance during which Barbara Goose became the local head of DigitasLBi, Karen Kaplan the chief executive and chairman of Hill Holliday, and Pam Hamlin, the global president of Arnold Worldwide.
Together they oversee thousands of employees, hundreds of millions of dollars in revenue, and the marketing of household brands from Dunkin Donuts to JetBlue to Progressive Insurance.

And is this really needed? Other than following men into the mens room, I try to be part of every conversation possible
With you 100% on the male bashing commercials and other entertainment.
Swap roles in your mind--not you specifically as you already know this--the next time a commercial shows the white male as ignorant, buffoonish, incapable of the simplest task and totally clueless. . .swap his role with the minority or female in the commercial and imagine the uproar and angst and wailing and charges of sexism, racism and so forth.
And by the way, advertising is supposed to be targeted, you know, aimed at your broad customer base. No so anymore. It seems political agendas trump common-sense advertising processes these days.
I saw an ad for a dental plan. It was a black and white video with a white male dentist. The voice then mentioned not to live in the past, all of a sudden you see bright colors and smiles and...a white woman was the dentist. How did we survive all those years with creepy white males as dentists? I limit TV viewing these days but you are correct, targeted ads are no longer the norm. I read a quote from a woman, somewhere on a sports-related website that since women apparently watch pro sports in high numbers, that men will now be subjected to female hygiene products. And a comparison was made, to get this, “beer and pizza.”
I agree with you, but Liberal men are programmed to hate themselves, so no objection there.
So the ads will get real whiny on PMS days and bossy the rest of the time?
I don’t think I could ever devise a situation in which I would use the words Other than following women into the womens room...” yet this is allowed into a major daily newspaper. Some thoughts are better left unsaid.
Targeted advertising is important as you wish to attract the potential buyer, that is why you buy ad time during certain shows/events, as well as “staff” the advertisement with the right mix of people, a representative sample of the people most likely to buy your product. . .your customer target base. (That is why Saturday morning commercials are all about sugary cereals and Boeing advertises during “serious” news shows.
Which bring up the whole thing these day of and the RAT manufactured outrage over supposed republican objections to the mixed race couple in a commercial.
Most adults tune-out commercials that is for certain, especially thinking (read: conservative) adults. So, where do advertisers get the idea that their major customer base would identify with the actors in the mixed-race couple with the mixed-race child commercial. . .especially if the husband is White and the wife Black (a very rare thing). Nonetheless, that is the norm in most of the mixed race couple ads I've seen.
Anyway, “they” say women are watching sports in great numbers but I don't really see it. I think perhaps more women are watching but I think the over-all number of women watching is low when compared to men.
As an aside, my father was a dentist before he retired. A very good one by all accounts. A bit old school, but good. Knew his business.
Had an abscessed tooth on the morning of our drive from DC to Minnesota for a family vacation. Dad didn't want to take time to drive into DC to his office and do a tooth extraction on me, as this would take up almost the entire day, so he sent everyone out of the house, used ice-cubes to numb my tooth and gums and pulled out the ol’pliers and started pulling. He would stop when the pain REALLY hurt and then would ice again and finally the tooth was extracted and we were on the road. . .like I said, old school).
There is a sense of political correctness in ads and if it is accurate that women, likely far left types, have the ultimate say in the product, then we get these biased messages. One example is a home burglary where all the criminals (three, IIRC) are white guys. The ad character (mascot if you will) was a woman who of course saved the day. Imagine if three non-white males were shown as burglars. I also saw an ad where a man entered the kitchen and asked his wife what was for dinner. The result was she picked up a knife and took a step towards him. This was for a frozen food. I have seen the ad just once, hopefully, it was removed.
This person obviously hasn't watched the show recently.
