At least 4 killed in shooting at Fort Hood; gunman among dead

FORT HOOD, Texas - A soldier opened fire Wednesday at Fort Hood, killing three people and wounding several others before taking his own life, law enforcement sources told CBS News.

The incident occurred Wednesday afternoon at Fort Hood, the site of a notorious 2009 mass shooting.

Law enforcement sources said four people were killed, including the gunman, who died of a self-inflicted wound. Officials said several people were wounded, although the exact number was not immediately clear. At one point there were reports that as many as 14 people had been wounded.

Sources told CBS News the shooter had been identified as 34-year-old soldier Ivan Lopez. A source said the violence apparently stemmed from some sort of soldier dispute.

In Chicago, President Barack Obama said he was following the situation closely. Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel was also informed, Navy Rear Adm. John Kirby said.

"We're heartbroken that something like this might have happened again," Obama said, referring to the 2009 massacre. "I want to just assure all of us we are going to get to the bottom of what happened."

Warning sirens went off on Wednesday afternoon and all personnel were urged to shelter in place as the base went on lockdown.

"There has been a shooting at Fort Hood and injuries are reported. Emergency crews are on the scene. No further details are known at this time," the post said in a brief statement.

A man who said he was a witness told CBS affiliate KWTX that about 20 shots were fired at a post motor pool. The man said he saw a soldier jumping over a fence and running away, but it was not clear whether that solider may have been the shooter.

First responders from surrounding communities headed to the post, home of the Army's 1st Cavalry Division.

Is this an Obama thing; or did it start sooner?

Clinton, actually.

I know that the bases are sometimes huge but why allow private/personal cars on Base at all?

I worked a civilian at an AFB and had to park on the other side of the freeway and then cross the bridge on foot and walk through some kind of checkpoint to show ID before continuing on to work.

I had a bumper sticker that did allow me onto other bases but now question why.

they need to ban guns on the base... if they’d of put a big sign up this wouldn’t have happened.

My question, too...

also, whoever said, "where are we recruiting these people from?"!!

Connected or not, I wonder what the "mitigating circumstances" will be for this one?

"Ivan Lopez" is a rather schizophrenic-sounding name, too...sounds like an alias, a nom de plume, or perhaps a nom de guerre. IOW, the perfect US recruit. /s

This seems to be more than a “soldier dispute”.

3 dead and multiple injured?

Soldier dispute? The numbers sound more like a gang shooting... or some nut bar.

No sale...Not buying simple soldier dispute.

You mean like Ivan "Pudge" Rodriquez, famous baseball catcher?

That's different...LOL!

(Good one! But you have to admit, it's an unusual juxtapostion of rather "ethnic" names, in both cases. Baseball players do seem to come up with the most unusual combinations of given names, nicknames, and surnames...)

Not to make frivolous comments about a terrible incident. Just an unusual name, probably signifying nothing.

Isn’t every base in the US a Gun Free Zone?

There a lots of guns locked up in the arms rooms on Fort Hood. Even if you could get them issued out in time to respond to a shooting, there is not any ammo available.

Fort Hood is huge, there are around 45,000 soldiers stationed there. That would take a pretty large parking lot.

I’m just saying why not allow military personnel to carry side arms on them? And if for some reason why not at least increase the MPs with arms around the base after 2000?

The Army has quite an elaborate accountability hassle associated with weapons and ammo. It could be done, but it would be a pain in the neck for all involved.
