WASHINGTON —— Continuing to steer his U.S. Senate campaign as far to the right as possible, former Oklahoma House Speaker T.W. Shannon on Wednesday picked up the endorsement of U.S. Sen. Mike Lee of Utah.

A tea party favorite, Lee is associated with such groups as Senate Conservatives Fund and the Heritage Foundation, both of which have ties to former U.S. Sen. Jim DeMint of South Carolina.

"Unlike a lot of people who pursue public office, T.W. actually has a conservative record," Lee said by telephone from Washington on Tuesday.

Lee said he met Shannon after "I heard about him from several people who are familiar with Oklahoma."

"T.W. has shown me that he's a very impressive candidate," Lee said.

Lee, along with Texas Sen. Ted Cruz, led an unsuccessful attempt last year to block further implementation of the Affordable Care Act. More recently, he delivered the tea party response to President Obama's State of the Union Address.

Lee said he may campaign for Shannon in Oklahoma.

"I haven't booked any (airline) tickets yet," he said, "but that's a possibility."

Since Mike Lee and Ted Cruz are prohibited from endorsing an opponent of LG, how about former U.S. Sen. Jim DeMint weighing in on the S.C. primary about now ....

Shannon is the real deal guys.

You think Ted Cruz has balls. Just wait until Shannon gets elected.

“Since Mike Lee and Ted Cruz are prohibited from endorsing an opponent of LG”

I don’t think they’re prohibited. It just looks to be in bad form to endorse an opponent of a colleague, especially of one’s own party. But it’s been done. Bill Frist endorsed John Thune and Jim DeMint endorsed Pat Toomey (which caused Specter to change parties).

Mike Lee was on the ground stumping for Greg Brannon in North Carolina recently. He knows we need to elect solid conservatives to the senate.

At a closed-door lunch meeting of Senate Republicans Wednesday, the freshman conservative told his colleagues that he would not intervene in their 2014 primary fights or fundraise for the controversial outside group. Cruz added that the SCF’s decision to try to defeat sitting GOP senators in their primaries was its alone, according to several people familiar with the session.

This was in response to Mitch McC's ambush of him at a closed-door Senate lunch.

Right, I remember that. I think Cruz said that so he wouldn’t be pressured into endorsing Cornyn. But it’s still his choice. To your point, there’s nothing “prohibiting” him from endorsing, if he so chose.

Lindsey Graham and Sanford did an ad for Jim DeMint years ago.

I wish DeMint would run again just to get rid of Lindsey Graham.

Cruz is involved some way with the NRSC.
